Re: speed up/clean up 98 se
Hi Rob
We don't recommend the casual use of Registry cleaning software, mainly because the potential for causing more harm than good is a considerable risk. However, if you are aware of the risk (and make a backup of your Registry ahead of time [note that Win98 keeps 5 Registry backups automatically]) - then I suppose I'd say a reasonable choice is CCleaner. It has thorough "undo" functions, clear instructions, and is free-of-charge. It is available at most download sites, I tend to recommend cnet's download.com. Here's their link for CCleaner's latest version --- http://www.download.com/CCleaner/300...html?tag=mncol Also, for Win9x/Me systems, trimming startup programs is a necessary step for system stability and performance. I've long recommended the clearly written guides for such tuning that Paul Collins has maintained over the years --- http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php Lately, for folks with big enough hard drives on their older machines, I've been recommending setting up dual-boot systems (Linux on one partition, and Windows 98se on the other). You can have safe Internet access from the Linux system, and still play the older Windows games when booted into Windows 98 ... and to keep Win98 safe, disable the network adapter in 98 (but enabled in Linux). Best of luck . . . Gary
