CD drive and USB problems
I have an old Compaq Presario 1900 notebook running Windows 98, which has not been used in almost a year. Since I last used it, the CD drive has stopped working, and there is no longer an icon (E drive) for it. Also, new hardware, such as a usb drive, is not recognized when it is plugged in. A program which I attempted to install told me that the driver was missing, but I have been unable to find a driver for either the CD drive or the USB system. Compaq has been of little help. Any assistance will be appreciated.

Re: CD drive and USB problems
I see the drivers for your laptop here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...product=95452# but I don't see anything related to USB nor chipset. CD drives normally don't require drivers. The controller they're attached to (SATA or ATA - in your case ATA since it's so old) do. They don't even mention the specs so I'm not sure about which chipset drivers you would need. I just see from an ebay search that it seems to be a Pentium III 500. You can try the Intel chipset identification utility: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filt...s=17&submit=Go! If you go to device manager, do you see any exclamation points? |
