[SOLVED] I work for a small ISP for DSL and I need help
As you can imagine, this is my last resort as I have already tried to google it. So, the costumer has this regular modem with no integrated router. Normally on WinXP, I would just do
Control Panel>Network Connections>Create a new connection>Connect to the Internet>Set up my connection manually>Connect using a broadband connection using a username and password>Enter ISP name>Enter Username and Password Notice that there is a step with entering your username and password. Now, with Win98, the most I have is Control Panel>Network>Assign IP Address, Subnet Mask and Gateway This can't possibly work because to log in, you need to put the username and password somewhere. Can someone help me please? I work on Saturday and our more experienced technician isn't working today. |

Re: I work for a small ISP for DSL and I need help
I just called the company that we are reselling from and their tech support says the costumer needs access manager. Anyway, that means he must bring the computer at our shop and we will have our experienced technician look at it.

I wish you hadn't closed that thread so soon! Basically I think you're using PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet). The steps you outlined in XP on establishing your connection are exactly consistent with that. Windows 98 doesn't have a PPPoE driver built-in. At one time WinPOET was the most popular (came with DSL modems), but not anymore. People use RASPPPoE now. Get RASPPPoE 0.98b here: http://www.raspppoe.com/ Then extract the zip and read the readme - it'll tell you how to install the driver. (You may have to go to the command prompt and move to the windows\system folder to run raspppoe, and when running it, make sure your modem is on and connected). |

Re: Reply to "I work for a small ISP for DSL and I need help"
I forgot to also mention: If you have Windows 98 SE, you'll need this patch from Microsoft
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/243199 Get it as soon as you get on the internet. Windows 98SE has a bug that can cause it to hang when connected to the internet via RASPPPoE, and that patch fixes that. (The bug doesn't affect Windows 98 first edition) |
