Question Screen Area won't adust

I am new to computers so do not know if I posted to the right category. I am using my folks old Gateway Pentium II win 98se. The monitor is a Gateway EV700. The problem is that it looks like an VX900T is what is set for the monitor and the screen area is a 640 x 480. The screen area is set at less and will not adjust to more. I went to Advance to check font and it is set on small fonts (in green letters) so can't adjust that either. I was wondering if this has something to do with what monitor has been setup for this computer. They bought the computer and monitor from a local school so I do not know if this EV700 was hooked up to another computer and do I need to change the VX900T to the EV700. They did not get any setup instructions. Please help!

Re: Screen Area won't adust

I think you're missing the graphics card drivers. If you give us the exact model number for your gateway we can try helping you locate them.

Re: Screen Area won't adust

my gateway computer model is # E3200-400. (it says NLXMINI-DESKT before that), serial # 0015007036. The gateway monitor model is #E7006 and serial # M1A8J2063259.

Re: Screen Area won't adust

If you enter the serial number in Gateway's page, it pops up a page that says MPC handles support for that. So you click on the link and you type in the serial number (you have to modify it a bit per the instructions for it to work) and it takes you here
http://support.mpccorp.com/apps/comp...=GTW0015007036
When you click downloads it takes you here
http://support.mpccorp.com/downloads/driver.html
which isn't helpful because it lists ALL the downloads for ALL the models supported.
Clicking on legacy gateway systems doesn't help either because it has all the series (2600 4100 etc...) but not 3200.
http://support.mpccorp.com/gtw_support.html

I turned to google for help. A review from PC World
http://www.pcworld.com/article/23864...e3200_400.html
suggests the card may be an ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP with 4MB.
I went to the ATI site (AMD actually) to find the drivers, but the download link is dead
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/9...gacy-98me.html
Fortunately driversguide has it mirrored:
http://members.driverguide.com/drive...driverid=75184
Try that!

Also for your monitor, the drivers are here:
http://support.gateway.com/support/d...r&uid=21716464
Read the instructions for installation on this one, as the installation is manual.

Are you missing anymore drivers? Right click my computer, and look in the devices tab for yellow exclamation marks.

Re: Screen Area won't adust

Hi all

orangegloves - that's one vintage computer you have on your hands. It came out in 1998.

If the PC came with a driver disk when it was purchased from the school, that would be your easiest source for drivers.

Rather unfortunately, the Gateway & MicroPC support websites here in the States rather skip over your model if you look through the lists of models for downloadable drivers (the E-series seems to have been a "business" model, and the legacy business PCs are now supported by MicronPC [since they acquired that portion of the Gateway line a while ago]). The list for drivers has numbers both above and below E-3xxx --- but nothing beginning with E-3xxx is listed.

From a review from December 1998, the processor is identified as a 400mhz PII, the video and audio are built into the motherboard -- integrated versions of the "ATI 3D RagePro" graphics and a "Crystal PnP" audio. Interestingly enough, most systems of that model series shipped with Windows NT originally. PC World reviewed it back then --- http://www.pcworld.com/article/23864...e3200_400.html --- Here's an excerpt of that review:
Quote:
... speedy Pentium II-400 processor and Windows NT 4.0 operating system ... The motherboard integrates a Crystal PnP sound chip and an ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP graphics chip, but you can install an additional 4MB of video memory if you need it. The 17-inch Gateway EV700 monitor offers unremarkable display quality for images and text. But image adjustments are easy enough: A flywheel control lets you change on-screen settings by turning a knob.
_____________

If everything else works OK (rather remarkable really, considering it's age) except for the display issue --
1) Right-click on "My Computer" & select "Properties", then "Device Manager".
2) Click the plus (+) sign in front of "Display Adapters" -- and see if the ATi RagePro is listed or not (it might instead say "Standard VGA"). If the ATi RagePro is listed, the problem might not be the video card. If the RagePro is not listed, try finding and installing a good Win98se video driver for it.
3) While in Device Manager, also click the plus (+) sign in front of "Monitors". Remove all monitors that you see listed. (to be extra thorough, you can do this step in "Safe Mode"). This should make Windows 98 re-detect the EV700 after the next restart.

If you have to install new video drivers, be sure to uninstall any older ones beforehand (Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel .. look for ATI). For a generic RagePro driver, you can try the legacy one at amd/ati --- http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/9...gacy-98me.html --- (scroll down to the RagePro drivers).

Best of luck!
. . . Gary

late edit ... Hi there, blahTech -- looks like we were typing along at about the same time ... I just saw your post after I sent this ... the link on the RagePro drivers at ati.amd seems to be working now ---

Re: Screen Area won't adust

Hello again: I went to My Computer and opened up the properties and checked the devices. There was one with the yellow mark, so I checked that one. It is the Intel 82371EB PCI to ISA bridge {ISA MODE]. It said Crystal WDM Audio Codec: Hardware version 1.0.04; Device Status: this device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed [code 10]. Try upgrading the device drivers for this device. The device usage was checked for exists in all hardware files. could this be my problem. My parents also found the CD they had for this computer. It says: Gateway System Restoration CD, version 9.5, instructions: to reinstall system software and drivers, insert this CD while PC is on. For help reinstalling the Windows 98 or Windows 95 operation system or reinstalling Windows NT hardware drivers, start PC with this CD inserted. Would this put all the drivers back in that I might be missing. Also, I do ancestry research, so will I lose my PAF 5 Family Research from LDS, my AVG anti-virus, my CCleaner, Obituary Filer, etc or will I have to download these again? This old lady has a lot to learn and y'all have been great help so far.

Re: Screen Area won't adust

Hi again

Using Recovery Disks can be tricky --- because some will let you do specific tasks (such as choose to reinstall a particular driver or program) and some are less flexible. Some Recovery Disks procedures, especially the task that is usually called a "complete restore" or "factory image" will erase all current data and rewrite the hard drive to the exact same stat it was in when it arrived home from the store (anything added since then would no longer be on the computer).

If you have any documentation that came with the disks, refer to that. It does rather sound like your Recovery Disk does allow some sort of drivers restoration (the procedure mentioned on your Recovery Disk, where the CD is inserted when Windows is already running).

If you want to try that, it would be a good idea to backup things you want to save beforehand. If the system has a CD-drive that can write CDs (a "CDRW" = "recorder" or "burner") - you can save documents, pictures, music, and various program data (such as your family research data) onto recordable CDs using a CD-recording program such as Nero or Roxio (the Gateway likely came with such software already installed).
____________

Another choice would be to try and reinstall drivers yourself. The "PCI-to-ISA bridge" that you noticed as flagged in Device Manager is a device that is part of what we call a "chipset". The main ciruit board of a PC (often called a 'mainboard' or 'motherboard') has many chips attached. One very important group of these chips is called the "chipset", which often has two main chips - the 'North Bridge' and the 'South Bridge'. Your Gateway seems to lack the right drivers for the 'South Bridge'. This is a bit unusual, as these drivers are generally the first things installed when a system is put together.

To find out exactly what motherboard & other hardware your system has, you can try running Everest Home Edition to detect things --- http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.ph...c13fc5b7062019 ---

If Everest is able to give an exact identification of the motherboard in your system, you can visit the support website for that board, and download drivers from there (this would be fairly ideal).

I'm going to 'guess ahead' that it will find your system has the Intel 440BX chipset (since the South Bridge device in your system that needs drivers was most often found in that set). Should you not be able to find downloads from the motherboard manufacturer's site, you can still try using generic drivers from Intell. To reinstall those drivers, you can download and run the Intel Chipset Utility --- http://www.intel.com/design/software...chived_inf.htm --- click on the blue Windows98 in the upper left-hand box, agree to the license, and then follow the download instructions.

The Crystal sound drivers might be a little trickier to find - but it seems that Windows 98 has at least some idea of what it detected on the board (it gives you a name next to the yellow exclamation point). You can try booting into Safe Mode (by tapping the F8 key while your computer is powering on & selecting 'Safe Mode' from the menu). Then go to Device Manager again, select the Crystal device in the 'sound..' category, and then click 'Remove'. When you restart your computer, Windows will re-detect the sound device & look for drivers on your system. If you still have the correct drivers in good shape stored somewhere in the computer, Windows 98 might be able to find them & reinstall them. Otherwise, it will prompt you to provide them. You can cancel the procedure at that point. We can help you find sound drivers if you post the info that Everest finds regarding audio/sound devices.

If Everest identifies your motherboard as a Gateway part number MBD001125-XX -- the Windows98 driver is available on the site blah789 linked you to earlier. The Crystal chip was used in some early Creative devices (the company that makes the well-known "SoundBlaster"s), and your driver is listed as "onboard sound" --- http://support.mpccorp.com/apps/filelist.asp?ID=5190
_______

It's possible that some of the older parts in the computer are beginning to act up a bit, so you might also want to consider checking the hardware. [If the hardware is failing, it can cause all sorts of software problems & waste a lot of your time]. Check the memory ( http://www.memtest.org ), the hard drive ( http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 ), and the bios settings (you'll likely need to Google to find a manual -- once in the Bios Setup, look to see if the date/time setting is several years behind. If so, the CMOS battery should be replaced --- http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...&product=94878 --- (this guide for replacing batteries comes from Compaq, but it is also a good generic guide).
_____________

Best of luck
. . . Gary

Re: Screen Area won't adust

Hi there again, I installed the Everest home Edition and boy can it find things. It appears to be the North Bridge and not the south, I pasted it here for you to see, was that ok to do that. I am going to check those sites that you gave me to find the device that I need. I thank you so much for all the help that y'all have given, you are a Godsend.

Re: Screen Area won't adust

With All D R to the other users in this thread this computer is upgradeable to Windows 2000. If you have a minimal 128MB of ram memory a borrowed legit W 2000 bootable CD would be my recommendation. Most of your driver issues would be corrected with this operating system installed. Access this through the bios settings upon reboot. Press delete and boot from your CD device, (1st boot device CD device) second device IDE 0. Further post if you are able.

Re: Screen Area won't adust

I was wrong about the card! It was actually a Rage 128VR. (Everest is good - I'm impressed!) The download page is the same as for the Rage 3D Pro.
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/9...gacy-98me.html
I don't know why, but when I click on the download it says unauthorized download... Anyway like I said earlier, if the AMD page doesn't work, try this driversguide one
http://members.driverguide.com/drive...driverid=75184

Your north and south bridges are consistent with the 440BX chipset, but I'm looking on the Intel site and there's a bunch of 440BX's: JN440BX, RC440BX, SE440BX, SE440BX-2, and SR-440BX.
I do agree with gary that you should run the chipset identifying utility he posted the link to:
http://www.intel.com/design/software...chived_inf.htm
(first download in the table)

Re: Screen Area won't adust

Hello again, I logged onto the site that Gary recommended and printed out the read me. It really sounds like Greek to me, but it looks like I may try the Silent Mode or the Unattended Preload as it doesn't require user input during installation. (maybe the interactive mode might be better) It says something about doing some deleting, so hope that I delete the right things. By using this installation, will it install where it is supposed to and do I still need to delete anything? Now I'm getting nervous!

Re: Screen Area won't adust

I'm feeling nervous too. Do you have any media you can copy your files to to back them up? (CD-R, DVD-R, flash/thumb/pen drive, external hard drive, anything)

Re: Screen Area won't adust

I have a cruzer 2gb flash drive I could backup on and I already have my ancestry research backed up. It is just that I do work for Obituary Daily and am going to have to make sure I backup all those files and then will have to reinstall it so I can post to it daily. I am wondering if I am going to have to install all my programs again, maybe I should just try using my restoration CD and see if that is going to restore those chipsets. What do you think about that?

Re: Screen Area won't adust

Hi again all

orangegloves -- Sorry that the Intel software instructions look so confusing. That software is usually run by technicians, but I don't think you'll have any problem. I'd use the "Interactive Mode" -- strangely enough, it should be the easiest for you (fewer options to decide ahead-of-time). The Intel download in the link from my last post is the ".zip" kind of compressed file - so you will need an "unzipping program" such as WinZip, to unzip it. (Look through the Gateway's Program Menus - perhaps WinZip is already installed ... it was a very popular program --- or download an old Win98 version of it, I found WinZip 8.1 to work pretty well with Win98 --- http://www.oldversion.com/download.p...42677afab70452 ). You don't need to pay for that old version of WinZip, you can use it just fine as an "evaluation" (the difference is that you get a "nag screen" each time you use it where you agree that you are using it as an "evaluation".

Once your download, named "Infinst_enu.zip" has been 'extracted' or 'unzipped' (you can accept the default unzip folder), just click on the "Setup.exe" to start the installation, and follow the prompts. It only takes about a minute to run -- it will detect which chipset & operating system you have & install the right drivers. Nifty little program.

Nexxtech makes a valid point that Win2000 is a more stable and compatible operating system than Win98 -- however, of course, you'd need to have a licensed disk, and you'd want to see beforehand if your geneology programs will run in Win2000. Win2000 with Service Pack 4 requires a good 384mb of memory to run comfortably, if an antivirus and firewall need to be active for Internet access. Win98, too, will struggle a bit with only 128mb. Crucial lists your Gateway model's memory maximum as 384mb total = since your motherboard has three memory slots, the most you can add is two more 128mb PC100/PC133 modules to bring the total to 384mb. I would avoid spending money on a machine as old as your Gateway, because it's parts are already living on borrowed time (they've passed the normal "mean time before failure"). You could check with friends, though, some might have usable old parts lying about in a garage or attic!

Best of luck!
. . . Gary

Late edit -- You folks type faster than this old man :) ...

I don't think you have much to worry about with the Intel Utility, but backups beforehand are always a good idea. If the Intel Utility detects anything amiss, by the way, it just tells you so & exits without installing anything.

---Ah, one more late addition --- I don't think the Chipset Utility will have any effect at all on your installed programs (as far as you needing to alter them in any way -- you shouldn't have to reinstall them). the Chipset Utility only concerns drivers for motherboard devices. It can, of course, help everything on your system work better

Re: Screen Area won't adust

Windows 98 may not recognize USB flash drives automatically. You may need this driver first:

Re: Screen Area won't adust

Hello again, I loaded the winzip like you said Gary and will try again to load the chipset. When I tried last night, it kept filling up the tabs and I had to stop it, as it had already opened up 119 tabs, can't figure that one out. I will try using the web download this time.

Re: Screen Area won't adust

I was wrong earlier about the diff 440's. Apparently they use the same driver which you can download here (but which I totally missed earlier):
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...%2098&lang=eng

However your finding you have a JN440BX is not for naught. That's good because the Intel site has more drivers for it here:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filt...s=17&submit=Go!
I see the Crystal sound drivers, and I see ATI Rage Pro drivers. I also see some LAN drivers.

Again, I think for your ATI Rage128VR AGP, this download will work:
http://members.driverguide.com/drive...driverid=75184

So yeah, try all of these and see if you have any exclamation marks left in device manager.

Re: Screen Area won't adust

Hi again all

Sorry that the chipset utility . . or perhaps WinZip . . didn't go well. They are usually reliable --- this is what makes repairing computers such an adventure: there are so many variations & puzzles to discover.

Speaking of puzzles, it's interesting that Everest identifies the motherboard as Intel's Juneau board ... I wonder if the Gateway model had slightly different specifications than the standard Intel version? I notice that the ethernet driver on the Intel site is for the Intel Pro/100, while Everest seems to detect a 3com 3C905B.

For the 440bx chipset, try the Intel driver that blah789 found -- it's much better than the download I pointed you to (I think the one i pointed you to was rather an oddball download, since it tried to include so many different chipsets - sorry about that).

Sounds like you should make good progress soon -
. . . Gary

Re: Screen Area won't adust

Hello again, I tried using the second download that blah had in his message and it told me that I basically did not have the right computer for it, needed a 2000, so am going to try another one. It is hard to tell what they did to this computer when the school had it. I will keep trying though until I find something. The first download that I tried a few days ago did download some drivers like the BIOS and a couple of others but not the ones that I really needed. Although, for some reason it seems to be running a little faster, not much, but a little.
