web addresses with - won't work in win98.
Hello All, I have a problem. Basically any address that I come across that has a - in the address does not seem to work on my win98 operating system. I know it's specifially win98 because when I enter the website on my brother's computer, whose using vista, it worked perfectly. Is there a way to fix this or is IE6 and Firefox 2 just not able to detect - in their web addresses?

Re: web addresses with - won't work in win98.
Hi youngersibling
If you've been typing the URLs (addresses) in by hand, see what happens if you type that same address without the dash. . . . Gary ( P.S. ... yours is a curious situation --- since, your browser can reach some sites with dashes in them, if you are visiting this forum from your Windows 98 computer. The address of this forum ends in win-98-me-support. That's a few dashes right there. Curious!)

Hi
Unfortunately, No go. It takes me to this roadrunner, search engine type page. But that is kinda strange though, seeing as I can come to this page even though it has dashes. Strange. |

Explain the problem in detail. not in short. What happens when type web site address in browser. whether you are getting any error message. It should should result( may error like page not found, request times out, is it adding some postfix and prefix to your website address). define the probelm clearly. then only you can get the solution my dear friend.

Re: web addresses with - won't work in win98.
Alright, well essentially. When I enter an address with a - in it, either in IE or Firefox, the browser doesn't recognize the address. For example, say I put in, www.gaming-secrets.com right? It would than take me to a road runner search engine page, but the - between the address would be removed. So it would say, "search results for www.gamingsecrets.com", but dash would no longer be there. This happens on both firefox and IE.

Re: web addresses with - won't work in win98.
Hi again
This is a little tricky to track down, since I normally don't let my Windows 98 systems onto the Internet anymore (which makes it hard to test different scenarios). But I'll try a test later tonight & see if I experience anything like your situation. (In case you're wondering: I don't feel Win9x/Me can be easily secured online anymore). In the meantime, you might run some full malware scans, just to make sure unwanted visitors aren't causing havok. You could also try reverting IE to an earlier version (add/remove) and then downloading and installing the most recent version of IE6 that Windows 98 can handle (using Windows Update should do). Try things with the IE settings at defaults, too. Best of luck . . . Gary
