Error message when connecting MP3 player to USB in Windows ME
I recently received a 4GB Onyx media player (manuf. by mach speed technologies) for my birthday.
Whenever I try to connect it to the USB on the back of my computer I get a blue error screen that says the following:"File Name: USBD (01) + 0000094F Error: 0E: 0028: FF09D22F" When I press a button to return, the computer works fine, but the mp3 player doesn't show up in My Computer like the user manual says it should. When I enter Device Manager, it shows USB Audio Player under "hard disk controllers" but the icon has a red "X" over it. Though, if I click on properties, it says "this device is working properly," even though I can't actually use it. How can I get it to work properly? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Error message when connecting MP3 player to USB in Windows ME
Hi upasaka1
Many such USB devices need to have their Windows-9x/Me drivers installed before the devices are plugged in for the first time. The Onyx player should have come with some drivers for WinMe -- did you install these prior to plugging in the player? With the Onyx player unplugged from any connections, try: 1) Boot into Safe Mode (start tapping the F8 key at power-up & select Safe Mode from the menu) 2) Go to Device Manager 3) Remove all devices under the USB category 4) Remove your audio device if it is still listed under "hard disk controllers" 5) Reboot 6) Allow Windows to reinstall the drivers for the USB controllers on the motherboard 7) Install the WindowsMe drivers that came with your device (or download a fresh copy from the Mach website) 8) Connect the Onyx to the USB port either when instructed during the Onyx driver installation, or afterwards. 9) Test. Best of luck . . . Gary

Re: Error message when connecting MP3 player to USB in Windows ME
Hello, Gary. Thanks for the advice. I'll try your idea, but I have a couple questions first.
I have tried installing the driver that came with it by following the instructions on the disk. The first thing it says to do is to connect the player and wait for an install prompt to appear. That's when I get the error message, and, obviously, no install prompt. The manual says the player will work in Windows Me, though the disk I have says "Driver Windows 98SE." Does that matter? Also, if I remove all USB devices will I have to reinstall my cable modem software? |

Re: Error message when connecting MP3 player to USB in Windows ME
Hi again
Generally, I'd recommend using an ethernet cable to connect your broadband modem to your PC, rather than the USB connection. Wired ethernet is as dead simple & reliable as it gets. USB, especially in the Win9x/Me systems, is a bit touchy about its connections. ... However, if you find that the USB works OK for your broadband, then yes, you can leave that device alone (though this might mean that you won't be able to remove the controller that it's attached to, since it will be 'in use'). Your cable modem software shouldn't need reinstalling. It sounds like they didn't update their Win98se driver for WinMe, and just figured that it would work with WinMe. Many devices work fine this way. It's probably just the installer portion of the software that's the trouble [I've always wondered if the most junior programmer gets assigned the "grunt work" of writing/configuring the installer software .... leading to most software issues being those of problems with installations]. Before removing anything in Device Manager, you could simply try again - but this time see what happens if you start with the driver installation first (before plug-in). Then, when plugging in, see if you can use a USB port on the front of the PC (if there is one up front). Also - try to use a USB port that isn't on the same controller as the broadband connection (ports on the same controller are often side-by-side). If you have recently reinstalled Windows Me, or if you might not be up-to-date on the Windows Updates for your system - you can try visiting Windows Update & installing all the patches available (Windows Update will still work for WinMe, even if there aren't any recent patches - Microsoft continued to release Win98 patches till mid-2006, I would imagine WinMe patches lasted at least that long). Never a dull moment! - . . . Gary

Re: Error message when connecting MP3 player to USB in Windows ME
Thanks, Gary.
You're advice must have worked, because I can use my player now. When I reinstalled the USB devices, a prompt came up that said Windows couldn't find a couple of different files for the drivers. I searched for them manually in a separate window, and told Windows where they were. Maybe that was the problem in the first place? Thanks alot. |

Re: Error message when connecting MP3 player to USB in Windows ME
Glad to hear of your success.
It is kind of funny how some of the driver installations can't find their own files, even when the installer created the folder containing them in the first place! ... Oh, well, it gives us a source of free comedy (and a quadrillionth illustration of "Murphy's Law")! As it's that time of year again, I hope your holidays are full of joy. . . . Gary
