Will Movie Maker work on a Win98

I've made a Win98 comp for my son's friend but the one thing he really likes is missing, (Windows Movie Maker). If I were able to get it, would it be able to work on a 98, and if not does anyone know of another program like it that is easy to get and will work on Win98?

No, Movie Maker was made for Windows XP and higher.
I think most video editing software out there nowadays is timeline based. You just need to look around for one that works with Windows 98.

that was the first one I got on a google search. Google for more.

No Movie Maker was originally made for WinME which is a Win9x system therefore it might work on Win98SE providing you know the correct files to install and register. This doesn't mean just getting the Mmaker.exe or what ever the name is there will be a lot of dll's and support files needed as well.

I have the WinME CD but I haven't tried to do this.

Re: Will Movie Maker work on a Win98

Ah... Thank you for the correction Keith! I've never had my hands on Windows Me so I didn't know!
So yeah, like Keith said you might try to get the Me version of the Movie Maker files. Perhaps ask a friend with Windows Me to zip their C:\Program Files\Movie Maker folder and send it to you. If it says you're missing dll's just download them on an as-needed basis and put them in the system folder and try again.

Re: Will Movie Maker work on a Win98

This is really late, but I finally got around to trying this. I tried it on Windows 98 Second Edition (all patched up) and copied all the files from the Movie Maker folder in Windows Millenium Edition. I tried it both with version 1.0.1376.0 (default installation of Windows Millenium Edition) and version 1.0.1377.0 (after you run Windows Update).
It doesn't work. Exact error message: "The moviemk.exe file is linked to missing export shell32.dll:shgetfolderpathw." Looks like the function was remapped in Windows Millenium Edition's version of shell32.dll.

Re: Will Movie Maker work on a Win98

Hi Blah,

Programs don't like to be moved from one machine to another by copying as they usually have necessary files (DLLs etc) in the Windows System directory. Sometimes if you move each file it screams about from the XP machine running the program you can get it going. It may scream for several files one at the time as you move them. Norton's Uninstall Deluxe has a feature to move programs. Mine is pretty old a newer version may still have it.

Good Luck, Jim

Re: Will Movie Maker work on a Win98

Hi

Thanks for both of your ideas and information, I've kind of given up on that idea anyway, and the comp is gone now to the person I was building it for. I put a program on it that isn't quite a Movie Making program but it has effects and transitions that you can add to pictures to make a cool slide show. It's not Movie Maker but it's the best I could do without spending any money. The name of it is MGI Photo Suite and I think it came with my Visioneer Scanner if I remember correctly. It actually is a pretty nice program. Well thanks again for taking the time to try and help me. You guys and girls on this site are great, I've received so much help and good advice since I first joined in June of 2008.

Thanks
