windows 98 & windows media player

I tried posting earlier, but I'm not sure if I did it correctly so I thought I'd try again. This is my first time using this website.

I have an old Gateway with Windows 98, Intel Pentium 3 processor, 550Mhz, and 128 MB Ram.

Some time ago, I had some problems with viruses, etc. and tried deleting them. I think I deleted some things that I wasn't supposed to. I have a few problems that need repairing.

First Problem - Whenever I start my computer, I get three error messages. I close them and the computer works O.K. for the most part. The error messages read:

Error loading powrprof.dll. A device attached to the system is not functioning.

Error Starting Program. The SETUPAPI.DLL file is linked to missing export NTDLL.DLL:NtClose.

RUNDLL Error loading powrprof.dll. A device attached to the system is not functioning.

Second Problem - Windows Media Player has no sound. The video works fine. I do get sound on Quicktime and Flashplayer. I tried downloading WMP again and searched for fixes online, but nothing seemed to help.

Third Problem - Sometimes get error message when I hit the PRINT button. This only happens occasionally. The message reads:

Hpftbx15 An error has occurred in your program. To keep working anyway, click IGNORE and save your work in a new file. To quit this program, click CLOSE. You will lose information you entered since your last Save.

When I click IGNORE, the print job starts and I get another message. It reads:

Hpftbx15 This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

If I click on DETAILS, the message reads:

HPFTBX15 caused a general protection fault in module HPFTBX15.EXE at 001f:00000939.

If I click CLOSE, the message goes away and the computer seems to work fine. The print job completes. I tried looking up this error message online and found some solutions, but they didn't seem to work for me. Maybe I was doing something wrong.

Problem Four - I purchased a software program online. It is supposed to fix my computer problems and registry problems. It is called ParetoLogic and RegCure and they cost $40. I tried downloading it but got an error message that read:

Error 1723 There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action UninstallSetup, entry: UninstallSetup, Library:C:\...|MSI4363.TMP

Does this software work and is it worth the money?

I suspect that all of these problems are connected. If anyone has some help for me, it would be greatly appreciated. If possible, give me step-by-step instructions because I always seem to have problems when I try to fix things. I'm not real computer literate, but I know just enough to get me in trouble. Thanks

Re: windows 98 & windows media player

powrprof.dll seems to be used for power management. If you go to control panel, and click on power management, that might not work if that file is missing or damaged.

WMP not having sound: well first you have to check if it's WMP, or if it's the file you're trying to play. Try playing some of the files from your C:\WINDOWS\MEDIA folder. If they fail to play, it's likely WMP. If not, then you're probably missing the audio codec for the files you're trying to play. If you want to know what codec the file you're trying to play uses, feed it into a tool like gspot (get version 2.21) from here http://www.headbands.com/gspot

Hpftbx15 seems to be a file related to the HP printer. Perhaps reinstalling or updating the drivers might help.

No idea if that registry cleanup program or whatever it is works, but if you have windows installer problems, you could try re-installing windows installer from here (if it lets you that is)

Re: windows 98 & windows media player

I don't trust registry "fixers" only "cleaners"

-big difference one fixes the problem by moving stuff around (bad in my opinion)
that would be your program - regcure)

- the other program simply deletes not used registry entries
a good program is CCleaner - its free
