Win ME shows new hard drive in Device Mgr but not in My Computer

I installed a used 8 gb hard drive in my Son's Dell computer running Win ME and the disk is reconized in Device Mgr but not in My Computer. I was told to right click on My Computer and then on MANAGE but there is not a manage option in ME. Any sugestions on how to get Windows to reconize the new drive. If checking the BIOS is part of tyour answer, I don't know how to do that. Thanks

Re: Win ME shows new hard drive in Device Mgr but not in My Computer

Did this hard drive come from a computer using NT/2000/XP, or any operating system that uses a file system other than FAT? The 9x series will show the drive in device manager, and even let you format it through fdisk if this is the case, but it cannot read data from the drive, and so won't show it. If it is from another computer, is the data important on it? If it isn't, just run "fdisk" and format it

Re: Win ME shows new hard drive in Device Mgr but not in My Computer

The computer management console (and disk management console) are not available in Windows Me. As previous poster said, the tools to use to partition a hard drive is fdisk and to format it is format, and both are command-line (though you can run format from Windows Explorer too).
Go to start, program, command prompt. Type fdisk. You'll be in the menu. The first thing you want to do is select the other drive (press 5), because chances are the selected one by default has Win Me and you don't want to partition that by accident! Then just follow the menu to create a partition. When you're done, you'll have to reboot. You'll most likely find the new drive in my computer, but you won't be able to open it. Right click it and pick format. After you're done, the drive should work just fine.

FDisk may be a bit intimidating, maybe you would want to try a graphics user interface based program? Check this one out:
