Lacie HD usb2 /Belkin Pci usb 2 5ports/Win98se

Hello
A few weeks ago I have installed without any problems a Lacie desktop 500gb on my old pc running win98se.
Prior to do that, having only 1 usb1 port on it, I have also installed a Belkin pci usb 2.0 5 ports.
I have just installed the card in a free slot, then download the driver from the belkin site and the usb2 slots where operationnal.
Then I connected the Lacie and it has immediatily been recognized and installed whitout any manipulation.
The same way I could connect a multicard reader, a flash-drive and a ID card reader.
Unfortunately I got a problem whith the internal HD !
So I put another internal Hard Disk I had in spare, I formatted it and I reinstalled all the OS and the programs.
When I tried to reinstall the Belkin card I got some difficulties and finally it seemed to have been installed correctly...which is probabily not the case because the system didn't recognize any of the usb2 devices I've tried to install afterwards.
I'm trying all combinations and possibilities since more than a week and now I'm totally lost...
Can you help me and give me the right procedure ?
Many thanks.
Merci d'avance

Re: Lacie HD usb2 /Belkin Pci usb 2 5ports/Win98se

Hi spaa

When you installed Windows 98 onto the spare drive, did you use a Windows 98 2nd Edition CD? That version of 98 has better USB support than the original. Also, after installing Windows, did you (after installing your antivirus & firewall) visit Windows Update, to get the updates through mid-2006 (which should help with compatibility)?

If you didn't have the updates in place, try again after updating 98. You'll likely need to provide the Belkin Win98se drivers once again, and then test your devices.

Seems like you should have a good chance of success.
Best of luck
. . . Gary

Re: Lacie HD usb2 /Belkin Pci usb 2 5ports/Win98se

Dear Gary,
thank you for your reply.
To reinstall my system I've used the original cd win98se.
Afterwards,I've downloaded all updates available from the "windows update site" (By the way, every 2 or 3 days i'm prompted that there is a new critical update available - nr 823559 - and I now realized that it has already been installed 7 or 8 times ?)

Nevertheless, since I've my pc, I probabilly have installed others programs from other sites.
On the old disk I had a "Backup" program in the System Tools that I don't retrieve on the new one. (I used that program a few months ago to made a general copy of my old system disk on the Lacie, and due to the problems encountered to reinstalled it I've been forced to generate a new one from scratch.)
What am I doing wrong ?
How can I be sure that the Belkin card has been correctly recognized ?

When I look in the system information, the Belkin card is present under the "universal serial bus controller" whit a usb2 root hub device, and the driver is Owc usb\0004.
and when I look under "Ports" i see usb1 supported, usb2 not supported !!!

Do you have an idea to solve that ?
Many thanks again

Re: Lacie HD usb2 /Belkin Pci usb 2 5ports/Win98se

As for the critical update showing up repeatedly, you're not the only one:
http://www.windowsbbs.com/windows-95...ty-update.html
http://www.windowsbbs.com/windows-95...-823559-a.html
Perhaps install it manually? (Unfortunately I can't seem to find the download page - seems redirected to the Windows Update site)

I must ask: how much of the 500GB drive is recognized by Windows 98? Right click it on the drive in my computer and choose properties. I'd be very surprised if you got more than 128GB, but maybe Windows 98 treats USB drives differently.

Re: Lacie HD usb2 /Belkin Pci usb 2 5ports/Win98se

Hi again

Since you've got all the updates in already (even though one seems to be stuck in that reinstall loop), let's try simplifying what we know is installed for USB:
1) Shutdown Windows, power off, and disconnect power cord.
2) Using antistatic precautions, open the case & remove the Belkin PCI card.
3) Close things up, replug, & power on.
4) Boot into Safe Mode
5) Go to Device Manager
6) Remove all USB devices listed in that category
7) Reboot
8) Let Windows reinstall the Generic USB Host driver for the USB built into the motherboard.
9) Shutdown Windows, power off, and disconnect power cord.
10) Using antistatic precautions, open the case & reinstall the Belkin PCI card.
11) Close things up, replug, & power on.
12) Boot into Safe Mode
13) Try installing the Belkin drivers in Safe Mode (this might/might-not work)
14) Reboot normally.
15) If the Belkin drivers wouldn't install in Safe Mode, install them now. --- and then test the connections.

A possible solution to the Windows Update that keeps coming back is to remove it manually from Add/Remove Programs ("Show updates") and then visit Windows Update manually (not through Automatic Update). Some users also find that running the 2004 Security CD from Microsoft fixes the problem (but of course, you'd have to have that old disk laying around). Another source might be something like the "Unofficial Win98se Service Pack", which bundles all sorts of updates for 98 on a CD.

Best of luck

Re: Lacie HD usb2 /Belkin Pci usb 2 5ports/Win98se

To blah789,
hello, when the Lacie usb disk was "succesfully" installed, it was correctly recognized by win98se.
I had made a general backup of my system (+/- 4.5gb) and "my computer" reported 494gb free.

Re: Lacie HD usb2 /Belkin Pci usb 2 5ports/Win98se

Hello Gary,
here the results of my last trials : it works !!!
The Belkin usb2 card has been recoknized correctly.
Then the Lacie disk has been installed, but whith the help of the wizard of the "new hardware installation" and not automatically detected as F: lacie mass storage like it was on my old disk.
I can connect a flash drive, the card reader ...etc
Many thanks !!!
The only remaining problem is that I cannot disconnect the usb disk using the secured procedure : when I click on the icon "disconnect usb equipment" the system propose the F: mass strorage disk, and when I click on it I get the message "problem with the disconnection...please try later".
All applications are closed, the disk is not in use ... do you have a suggestion?
Thanks again.

Re: Lacie HD usb2 /Belkin Pci usb 2 5ports/Win98se

Hi again

I find that it's not so uncommon for an external USB hard drive to attach and be recognized OK, even when plugged in after the system is already powered up & running --- but then it will not want to be "hot unplugged" (unplugged while still able to draw power). The easiest solution to this is, somewhat inconveniently, to unplug the external drive after the next system shutdown. There may be another forum tech or member who has found a better workaround for Win9x/Me and external USB drives while powered-up, if so - jump on in here folks, and enlighten us all!

Best of luck
. . . Gary
