EEK! *huge problem* Please help

Alright, here is a problem i have been having for 2 days now, and its quite a big one. Id appreciate any help

Heres my specs:

Video Card: ATI Rage 128
DirectX Version: 8.1 (to my knowledge)
Sound Card: Yamaha OPL3 SAx
Pentium II ABS
Windows 98

OK!!! Now...

When i run a video test on my computer, basically it is saying that i have no usable device. Meaning DirectDraw, and 3dfx Glide. Now isnt that all included with directX? I have been having this problem ever since i installed direct X 8.1.

Problems:

1. Not letting me run any kind of game/program that uses directX (or a video card to my knowledge)

2. When i goto Start > Run > DXDIAG it saids "your System Specifications has failed in the past, would you like to bypass now?". "Your sound option has failed in the past would you like to bypass now?", and it goes on like this until i bypass everything...and it leaves me with nothing

Things ive tried

-Uninstalling my video card
-Updating it again
-Installing DirectX Again

Nothing worked.....i dont think its reading direct X right, why is this happening?

**~**~*~Sorry for the long post, please read it im dying here~
Thanks in advance-
Mike

hey Citron welcome to the forums !
when you say you uninstalled your video card and updated it again, did you actually update the video drivers or did you just install drivers that were on there before..if not, try updating drivers for your video and audio. One problem is, dx is a system component and it cannot be removed...

or.. you might have a problem with DDraw.dll. Ddraw.dll is dll file associated with Microsoft DX Direct Draw and if its corrupted or the incorrect version in comparison with the Direct X version existing on your harddrive you can get errors... to check this :

Click Start / Find / click Find File or Folders
In the Name box search for ddraw.dll and click Find Now
You should find at least one file located in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
Right click and choose properties on the ddraw.dll file.
Click the Version tab.
Within version verify that the file version matches the version of your Direct X.
If you do not have a matching version it is recommended that you delete this file and again attempt to reinstall the latest version of Direct X.

If you decide to redo your video drivers it might help if you do it in safe mode.

omg, thank you so much
i will try that as soon as i get home and post my results

Oh, and by the way im kind of confused about the video drivers / video updates...

my video card is: ATI Rage 128
i can only get one update for that....that would be the latest driver for that. What other updated to video could i get? maybe im missing something

ok for your ATI rage 128, video drivers update would be sufficient and you can get the latest drivers here . These support directx 8 and openGL so it should work . If you update these drivers and then reinstall directx8, ddraw should reinstall with it. post back if you get any other problems...aight ?

ttyl

[edit] hehe forgot about ddraw stuff...what you see there is just telling you the version of ddraw you have...it is integral part of direct x and its updated every time you update directx... you can do that here

Citron,
your problem may also lie in a corupt directx install program, as you say it was fine before this.. i had a similar problem to this before. i downloaded the official program from the windows update site which automatically installs for you and i had no probs since.
