Re: iexplorer error

Hi gatasalvajefl

If either you or a friend has access to a Windows XP machine, you can create an "Ultimate Boot Disk for Windows". If you start the troubled computer with a UBCD4Win, you can clean it of malware using the antivirus & antispyware tools on the CD --- http://www.ubcd4win.com ---

Once clean, if the IE version installed on the PC is a lower version than IE6, download and install IE6 from the Microsoft download site. Or - if the IE version is already IE6, then try reverting back to an earlier version using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel - and then download and reinstall version 6 again.

Should that not work, an inplace reinstall will fix things, so long as the PC is free of malware when the reinstall is performed.

Windows 98 has been getting more and more difficult to secure online in recent years, and I can't say I recommend visiting the Internet from a Win9x Windows operating system. Windows 2000 or Linux are more secure choices for older machines that need to have Internet access. If you must stay with Win9x, visit the Internet from behind a hardware firewall, and track down an antivirus package that still has updates available for Win9x.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

Re: iexplorer error

Hi,
ubcd4win means Ultimate Boot CD for Windows. Gary will probably be back soon to continue to help you.

Good Luck

Re: iexplorer error

Hi again all

All the instructions necessary to make the "Ultimate Boot CD for Windows" (UBCD4Win) are on its Internet homepage. Here's the link again --- http://www.ubcd4win.com ---

The instructions are nice and clear = they even include pictures of every step. All you need is a Windows XP CD and a blank CD to create the disk. You'll let the program connect to the Internet when making to the CD, so it can download & include the latest antivirus/antispyware updates for the programs that you select while building it. All the creating of the ubcd4win disk is done on your Windows XP machine.

Once you have the ubcd4win CD created, open the CD-drive on the Windows-98 machine & place the ubcd4win in the tray (but don't close the tray just yet). Then have Windows 98 restart. If your PC is set to boot from the CD, you will see the Ultimate Boot Disk for Windows menus. If it doesn't boot from the CD, have Windows 98 restart your PC again --- only this time, press the key or key-combination mentioned in the banner or splash screen "Press F1 (or F2, F10, DEL, etc.) to Enter Setup" -- then look for a Bios menu for "Boot Order" or "First Boot Device" and set the first boot device to the CD drive (or DVD drive, if you have one). Then the PC will boot from the ubcd4win. The AntiVir program and the A-squared Free programs are particularly thorough, and have a good chance of cleaning up any infections your computer might have.

Best of luck
. . . Gary
