Re: I Have Created a Monster...
Ok...I went to get a 6.x file. I don't have the right file(I guess). Where can I download, to disk, the proper 6.x file? Microsoft? No. I went to a googled site and they had a list from here to China on applications and I couldn't decide which one to get. Now I am getting:
"While Initializing device NTKERN: INVALID VxD dynamic link call to device number 26, service 74. Your Windows Configuration is invalid. Run the Windows Setup again to correct this problem." I ran it again and got: "The following file is missing or corrupted....etc. etc. I am at a loss. I have to load the Win98 now, as I don't have a disk for WinMe. Sorry to bug you this way. I DO appreciate you guys. Steve |

Re: I Have Created a Monster...
Hi Alive,
The proper response for booting the 98 Start Up disk is as you described (A:>) the DOS prompt. Makes no difference if the CD is in or out. Official MS 98 install disk does not boot. You would navigate to the CD Drive, the Startup disk set it up and told you it's new name as it booted. At the CD prompt (E:> or whatever) type SETUP Enter. You should be off and running the CD install. If the boot disk did not ask you if you wanted the CD then you do not have a proper Win98 Startup disk. Good Luck, Jim |

Re: I Have Created a Monster...
This is a response to the original post
After you boot from a DOS floppy disk, sometimes, when you run a program, for whatever reason, command.com gets unloaded from memory (I think), so when you exit and return to the DOS prompt, you'll get that message (if the floppy isn't inserted for example, or it can't find it in the path). I think the simplest thing to do is to just type a:\command.com |

Re: I Have Created a Monster...
I'm more inclined to think that the boot disk is corrupt (command.com is corrupt). When you boot you get, from memory, 3 options. One of those is to boot without CD Rom support. Select that one and see if the same thing happens. If it stays at the command prompt (A:\) then type (no quotes) "attr command.com" and press enter. If all is okay you should get a line with the attributes of the file called "command.com". If it comes up with "The following file is missing or corrupted:COMMAND.COM" error then the boot disk is useless to you.
If you can get your hands on a machine that has 98 or ME installed on it then you can use that to create a new boot disk. If you can't then go to www.bootdisk.com and download the required file to create the boot disk. The one you want is the Win98 (or 98SE) OEM disk.
