windows 95 problem

It can't load windows 95 even in safe mode. When the windows 95 loading page starts I shortly later receive a failure loading gdi.exe you must reinstall windows message and my PC shuts itself off.

I tried to get a bootlog but it wont work either

Heres what i have done so far with help from google:

md c:\windows\fonts

At this point I get a unable to create directory message, checked the fonts folder is there so i just continued with:

attrib +s c:\windows\fonts
extract /a d:\win98\win98_22.cab *.fon /l c:\windows\fonts
extract /a d:\win98\win98_22.cab *.ttf /l c:\windows\fonts

Neither of these work, it doesn't recognize my cd drive

This is when i manually tried to replace the file by doing this also replaced the gdi32.dll:

C:\ type cd windows\system Enter

At C:\Windows\System type ren gdi.exe gdi.bak Enter

Then type A: Enter

And finally at the A:\ prompt type copy gdi.exe C:\Windows\System Enter

Was going to try this but it only applies to 98:

Any help would be appreciated, its my father work computer (he doesn't like change) and he wants it fixed not formatted. He's weird that way.

Re: windows 95 problem

Hi Dai,
I assume you have a 95 install CD. You need a 95 startup disk. Do you have a buddy running 95? Get him to make one for you at Control Panel, Add/Remove Progs, Startup Disk. You should be able to download one. It's bootable, has CD support and many handy diagnostics and such. Boot the floppy. It will tell you what the letter of the CD is. Navigate to the CD (D: [letter of the CD] enter) and type setup enter. You should be off and running.
Good Luck, Jim

Re: windows 95 problem

I notice that you attempted to install files from a WIn98 CD. If you have Win98 then use it to upgrade your system from 95. You can also do a "repair" install of 95 by booting from the CD and reinstalling 95. You do have a legit Win95 CD, yes??
