Sound problems

Hi all,

My machine has 2 operating systems installed: win98 (the default on) and winXP.
My sound card is: Realtek AC'97.
I have the right drivers installed per each operating system; This issue is essential so it was double checked!
Still, in Win98 I have no sound whatsoever (system, audio etc), and when using XP, no sound problems at all.
I was advised, that the problem lies within the operating system itself, and it should be repaired.
I don't like the idea of reinstalling the win98 OS over an existing installation, so I'd like to replace the relevant sound files only.
Any ideas?
I'll be happy to have different diagnosis for the problem.

Thanks,

Hagay

There's no speaker icon in the tray.
Windows default sound scheme is applied, but it can't be run (the player appears disabled).

The problem is not there, the problem is within the OS itself: there's no sound device attached (according to the OS).
BTW, I've used the XP to run Microsoft virtual PC and install Win98 within the virtual environment, and guess what, everything works fine!, even without any need to install any driver what so ever.

Any ideas?

This is a hard one.

Thanks for the effort!

Re: Sound problems

I've already found this source and used it, but still no luck.
Again the funny thing is that in a virtual machine window, (I've used 2 systems: MS Virtual PC 2007 & Qmenu manager) there;s no problem what so ever.

Re: Sound problems

http://www.driverguide.com/
Login, skip ads,hit drivers, soundcard,R,Realtek.select company and you will see a list below, hit AC 97 Realtek ACL655.
I Have found that WDM sound drivers[Windows Driver Mode] works the best in win98. If you have your sound and video compression, sound recorder, volume control checked in windows componets, multimedia, I think the right driver will get you there. If you are not registered at Driverguide.com you will have to register, then they will send you an email. this is the only ACL655 that is listed. Even though Micro-Star listed all windows, notice that the choice was for 2000/xp.Probably will have to uninstall your Realtek first.
Good Luck,
Larry
