[SOLVED] W98 hard drive limits

Hi all

I have a freind at work who has an old laptop running Windows 98, however his Hard Drive has given up the ghost and died and he has asked me to replace the drive, ide just like to check on what drive size win98 is limited to, I know that XP without service packs is limited to 137gb so I have a feeling that win 98 is lower. I dont want to grab a drive for example 120gb when only half of it is useable under the operating system.

Regards

Re: W98 hard drive limits

If you want to partition the full 128GB, you'll need this patch from Microsoft though
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/263044
The format command might display the incorrect size while formatting, but that's only a cosmetic error
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/263045/EN-US/

You may also want to patch scandisk (for graphical mode)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/243450

I don't know about the command-line version of scandisk, but if it doesn't work, you may need to disable it (in case of a bad shutdown and it runs at startup)

@blah789

Thanks for the additional info, hopefully im planning on putting around an 80Gb inside so it wont need the patch you mentioned.

Actually the patch is for drives between 64GB and 128GB, so you would need it.

Fdisk Does Not Recognize Full Size of Hard Disks Larger than 64 GB
