Can't see Start Icon

Hello Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is my first post. When I start my computer, it starts the boot process. I even see the message that talks about pressing F10 to get to the boot menu. I pressed it once and nothing happened. The computer continued on. It then stopped at the win98 screen.
Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is your keyboard plugged in correctly? Is there a Num Lock or Caps Lock light on when you boot up?

I checked the keyboard and it is plugged in correctly. The NumLock light was on. I had to dp a hard reboot. After the system came back up, scandisk process started. It scanned the C drive. After that it gave me the drive ok message and proceeded to boot but stopped at the Win98 window.

Have you tried to boot up in safe-mode? At boot up continously hit the F8 key to get the option.

was able to come up in safe mode

Now that I'm in safe mode, what can I do to fix my problem? While in safe mode, I still did not see the start icon or anything else.

Thanks for everything so far.

My System

Let's see if it's spyware.

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. Open up the result.txt file created. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

We usually don't want this in safe mode, but if you can get into safe mode, give us a log in there.
