win 98 sound problems

I have windows 98 I am about to go crazy I've tried everything I know to try. My sound will play for a music cd but for nothing else. HELP

my volume control I can't set it because itis not there to set.
I have a compaq 7594 with windows 98 my pc is probably 4 yes old.
I've tried uninstalling then restarting for my sound drivers still no sound except for cd music
HELP

yes I've tried a lot of things nothing has worked yet. on my windows my volume control is missing. maybe this will help someone help me.

Go to Start->Run and type in either sndvol or sndvol32 (if the first one don't work) and hit OK. See if that will bring up the volume controls.
