Hi everybody
Here is the situation: I removed the hard drive from my presario 5000 (Win98SE) and istalled it as a slave in another PC to make a file recovery. When I installed it back in the presario the PC didn't start. 1. The power supply is working. 2. The DVD drive works 3. The CDRW works 4. The CPU fan works 5. The led of the diskette doesn't lit 6. The led of the HD lits 7. The mother board doesn't beep (finding an error) 8. The monitor doesn't display a thing Another thing: the CMOS jumper was inserted 2-3 which is "clear" and i moved it to 1-2 ("normal") as a way to correct the problem but didn't work. What else can I do? Please help |

check all the cables are secure and you haven't disloged any of the cards
if you moved the jumper to slave when you moved it did you remember to change it back again replace the cmos battery |

Still won't start up The must weird thing is that the drive A is not working (led doesn't lit) I never moved a thing that has to do with drive A. What in the motherboard makes drive A work? what can I check there to see if something is wrong? Thanks |

no beeps generally indicate p/s or m/b problem
remove the ram or video card and see if you receive the beep code also disconnect the floppy and see if it makes a difference |

Hi,
Are you sure the drive originally was not set at CS when it worked and you changed it to slave then back to Master?????? Double check to see that the other drive on this cable (middle slot) is set to slave. Master and slave work together, but CS must work only with CS. O.K., so you know, but I have done worse, just check it out. |

In detail
Ok, in detail:
I have an IDE cable with 3 connectors. The 1st says "SYS BRD" and is connected to the motherboard The 2nd (the one in the middle) says "HDD/ZIP" "DRIVE 1" and it's not connected The 3th says "HDD" "DRIVE 0" and is connected to the Hard Drive There's no slave disk in this case. I have a power connector cable with 5 connectors A group of cables goes from the power supply to the CD drive and from there to the CDRW drive and dies there. Another group of cables goes from the PS to the connector "P4" that is connected to the HD. Then goes to the "P5" which is in the air, and then goes to the drive A and dies there. I hope to be clear. Thank you |

Hi,
Darn, shoot that theory. Some of the WD drives when alone on a cable require that you set it to slave or take off all jumpers. Well, I failed on that one. Might be worth a try anyhow since quantum is rather old now. Do you have any other drive you can put on this same cable and try it with another drive set as slave? Have you tried a new ribbon cable? |
