Shut Down option missing from Start Menu
The title just about says it all. The ability to shut down has disappeared. I am using Windows 98. Can't find any reference to this on Microsoft.com. Any ideas?

Create a shortcut on your desktop, type the following: C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE user, exitwindows
Open drive C, program files - copy this shorcut you created and place it into the Windows, System or System32 folder. |

Thanks. That was useful as a work-round. But I'm still curious where Windows 98 stores the information about what should be in the lowest section of the Start Menu. I have multiple users, so presumably it's somewhere in the Profiles sub-directories. Any idea where and how to update this? Most likely location seems to be User.dat. ?? any thoughts?
Thanks again D |

Hi D
First I have a question. Do this, Only if you feel comfortable in the registry. Click Start/Run Type regedit and click OK. Expand the User Key until you get to the Explorer folder. [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] Hilight the Explorer folder in the Left Pane. In the Right Pane do you have this entry? NoClose 0x00000001 [1] |

Hi Morris, I begin to msee what's happened, but I don't know how.
I don't have the entry you describe. I have the following: [icon ab] No Close "0" There are a number of other similar entries with "0" and these also are missing. As well as telling me what the right entry should be, could you tell me the rules so that I can change the others too? or is it documented somewhere? I also notice that the user affected by this has no File menu in Explorer. ANyway. Thanks for your help David |

Do this, first backup the registry.
Click Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information. At the top of the System Information window click Tools and click Registry Checker. Click Yes to "Would you like to back it up again?" After you backup the registry, navigate to the entry you found [icon ab] No Close "0" Right click on it and select Delete click Yes to confirm Delete. Close the registry. Log off and back on. |

Good to here you got it fixed.
Here's a couple sites you might want to check out. http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d...t6/wrkc31.mspx http://www.winguides.com/registry/ http://theeldergeek.com/registry_edits.htm |
