Optimizing System Resources

I installed some more memory in my WIN98SE machine and am a little surprised that it doesn't free up some more resources. I can run Hijack This and post the log file for you knowledgable folks to review. Is there anything else I can do to give you a peek into my setup?

Thanks,

Nic Showalter

System resources are fixed in W9x, adding memory doesn't do anything for them. The basic RX for shrinking resources is to minimize the stuff you startup when you boot, and minimize the amount of applications you run simultaneously. The advanced RX is to install XP.

OS: Windows 98 & Windows XP Home/Pro

My System

These two can probably be disabled from startup. Go to Start->Run and type in msconfig and hit OK. Then go to the Startup tab and look for:

HP Lamp? - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\HPLAMPC.EXE
RealOne Sceduler - C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\REAL\UPDATE_OB\EVNTSVC.EXE

I would even recommend renaming the EVNTSVC.EXE to something like EVNTSVC.OLD. You can update it yourself since this process may be the main resource hog here.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O9 - Extra button: Dell Home - {D66B0240-8981-11D3-865C-80924EC10000} - http://www.dell.com/ (file missing) (HKCU)

Restart.
