Windows will not start on 2005 Dell Latitude
Be it in regular mode, or safe mode, my Dell Latitude (2005) will not even start the windows program. How can i install/reinstall any software if after 20 seconds of trying to start the program it shuts itself down. IS there any way to go a round this (signing on as system manger does not work either)?
Thanks in advance |

Re: Windows will not start on 2005 Dell Latitude
How far does it get? Does the system POST? Does it freeze when loading the OS? By your description of the problem it seems that it's working, just not loading the OS. Is there an error message posted?

Re: Windows will not start on 2005 Dell Latitude
It gets to the point where it appears to be trying to load the OS and then posts and error message and counts down 30 seconds "computer will shut down in 30 seconds" and shuts itself off. I know there are viruses on it. I have the home version of NOD32 but cannot even get to the desktop level to install it.

What OS are you running? You indicated you signed on as system manager.

Re: Windows will not start on 2005 Dell Latitude
Here's something you can try but you have to be quick. When the system starts, and starts to count down 30 sec to shutdown. Hit the windows key (one that looks like the windows Icon), click run, type in the box "cmd" (without the quotes), hit enter, and type SHUTDOWN /A That will stop the count down and you can try to remove the viruses. A better way would be to remove the drive, install it in a USB enclosure, and connect it to another system that is clean and run a virus check on the detected drive. This is the fastest way that I know to clean a drive that has major issues.
If your keyboard doesn't have a windows button or you can type fast, you can achieve the same result by hitting CRTL+ESC to bring up the start menu, ALT+R to bring up the run command, type in CMD then ENTER, and type SHUTDOWN /A. I've used NOD and I've had issues with it. If this is XP HOME with SP2, download the free edition of AVG. It does a better job. When system is clean, do a google/yahoo search for AVG FREE EDITION. Going directly to their site is a bit tricky to find the program. |

One other thing, make sure you are NOT connected to the internet. If there are viruses on the system, they may be accessing the internet at boot. Aquire SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY, AD-AWARE, and CWShredder and burn them to a CD from a clean system or you can put them on a locking flash drive. Run them all when the system is up and somewhat stable.
