dell cd burner

when i try to burn a cd an error box comes up with insert a blank cd message, the cd's are blank they are new what's wrong?

Hello and Welcome to TSF

The drive could be starting to fail on you or it could be dirty. A dirty CD-ROM drive can cause read errors with CD discs. Purchase a CD-ROM cleaner from your local retailer such as a local Radio Shack. Using a CD-ROM cleaner should sufficiently clean the CD-ROM laser from dust, dirt, and hair.
Dirty CDs can cause read errors and/or cause CDs to not work at all. Cleaning the CDs should be done with a cleaning kit but you can also use a normal clean cotton shirt. When doing this with a clean cotton shirt, wipe against the tracks, starting from the middle of the CD and wiping towards the outer side. Never wipe with the tracks; doing so may put more scratches on the disc.
If this does not help then you will need to replace the drive
