win 98 se to XP

OK, I went to load XP on win 98 system. I never got the win 98 se cd with the computer, AAARGH. I had made a flppy start up disk. XP loaded except the screen went blank. It said I was missing
C:\windows\himem.sys
C:\windows\dblbuff.sys
C:\windows\ifshelp.sys

Also it couldn't find WIN.COM.

I copied Himem.sys from the floppy. BUt, I can't find the other files. The computer doesn't recognize the cd rom drive. IT tells me to run scanreg but it says it is a bad command either at the A: or C: prompt. My DOS command knowledge is limited so I am stuggling thru. How can I find and copy those files? I have access to the web from other computers. Can I download what I need? Oh the agony of the hours spent and my wife thinks I am just fooling around!!!!

Thanks,

Hi,

Do you have a full version of XP or are you using an upgrade version? The safest way to get good results from XP is to have a full version of XP and start from scratch formatting to NTFS instead of the Fat32 format that win98 uses.

No, It's an upgrade version. Thanks for replying. I tried to extract the files from the win98_52.cab at the A: prompt( the c: propmpt said runs in win 32 only) for the dblbuff and ifshelp but it said it couldn't open the file.

Did you wipe the hard drive or are you installing it over 98?

I'd see if you can find someone with a Win98 or ME CD that you could borrow for a bit... wipe the drive and do a clean install.
