Confused Nlite wizard

[I have a computer with Windows 98SE and want to install Windows XP Home Edition using NLite(which trims down windows to the bare essentials). The computer is a Compaq Presario model # 5452 with connection to the internet by DSL . I need to get a copy of Windows XP to use. Do I first Uninstall Windows 98SE and then run Windows XP and Nlite?Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Nlite wizard

Hi bearinabox

I've heard of nLite (there have been several such tools over the years), but I don't have experience with nLite for XP.

I prefer not to use such tools, as security updates and patches tend to have problems on such modified systems (they did when I tested Win98Lite a few years back anyway).

An easier choice might be to use Windows 2000, and get Service Pack 4 onto it. The Presario 5452 maxes out at 256mb -- too little to run XP acceptably, but still within Windows 2000's comfort zone. Most programs compatible with XP are also compatible with Win2000, as they are built on the same overall architecture.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

P.S. ... I'd recommend erasing the drive & installing Win2000 fresh.
