Loading win98 from a cd
Hi,
I am trying to load win98 from my win 98 cd but my comuter (P2) doesn't seem to recognize its presence. The win98 "flag" comes up but it then stops with statements: "vmm32.vxd is required to run windows" and "If this file is not in your path, you may need to reinstall windows" and "Windows has stopped. Press CTRL+ALT+DELETE to restart your computer" When I do this it just goes through the BIOS again, the Windows "flag", and ends up again with these statements. Please help. Re: Loading win98 from a cd
Hi again,
My boot order begins with the cd rom. Since I don't have a boot disk for win98, can I make one from my win98se disk by using my new computer loaded with Vista? The only problem is my new computer doesn't have a floppy port!!! Warren Last edited by warren e : 06-25-2008 at 05:41 PM. |

Re: Loading win98 from a cd
Hi Warren,
Some MS 98 CDs do not boot. All you need is a 98 Startup Disk. You can make one on any running 98 System. Go Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Startup Disk. Or down load one. It will boot and set up the CD reader. Go to the CD Reader and run Setup. Good Luck, Jim |

Re: Loading win98 from a cd
Hi Warren,
You will probably have to find the 98 driver for the flash drive. A few years ago the makers included the 98 Driver with the Flash Drive. Then they started leaving it out and giving the info on how to get it. Now they just ignore it. Try the maker's site. If they don't offer it try driversguide.com, they sometime have one that works. The whole point of all this is that XP,Vista and etc. do not need a driver. They already have it. Thanks for the thanks, Jim |

Try this link and see if any of the drivers work for you.

Re: Loading win98 from a cd
Thanks, Jim and Grim.
I downloaded 2 drivers and successfully installed them. However, when I go into Windows Explorer, it doesn't seem to recognize the presence of the flash drive. "Hardware", however, tells me it is there but has the (!) to indicate something is amiss. I have tried quite a variety of procedures to fix it but with no luck. Any ideas? Warren |

Re: Loading win98 from a cd
Hi again Warren,
Indications are that you have not found the correct driver yet. I have a couple of flash drives from Staples. They have Staples name on them. Still haven't been able to find a driver for them. One thing more, there can be two drivers needed. One to make 98 USB work better or as USB 2. The other would be the actual Flash drive driver. Does System Manager say that USB is OK. If so then your problem is still the driver for the Falsh Drive. The drive would work even if the USB was not 2, just at a slower rate if you had the right Flash drive driver.. More good luck, Jim |
