Windows Setup Require 73 freeze
Hi:
I wanted to run a dual boot OS on my XP notebook, though when I went through the Win98SE boot CD. I recieved this error: Windows Setup Require 73 The cursor is under the W and I have no command prompt. If I shut off the notebook, and then turn it back on, it returns with the same message, as if I was turning a monitor off then back on. I was trying to install on a newly partitioned/formatted in NTFS 6 GB drive, thus I believe the C: is still intact, though I cannot boot to it. Thanks, Steve |

Re: Windows Setup Require 73 freeze
Win98 is fat32, not ntfs, not going to happen. When I dual booted
win98 with xp in the old days, you would have to install 98 first, then xp....Maybe theres a workaround,,,,

Re: Windows Setup Require 73 freeze
Hi all
As manic mentions, if you reformat the 6gb partition using the FAT32 file system, you might be able to install Windows 98 there --- but only if your laptop's hardware is old enough to have Windows 98 drivers available. nVidia system chipsets newer than the nForce2 are not supported for Windows 98, and cpus faster than 2ghz can have trouble trying to install networking files (there used to be a patch for that, but I believe it has since been pulled) -- also: systems with more than 512mb of memory require a system.ini entry to limit the amount of memory used by Win98. If you do manage to get Windows 98 successfully installed, you will then likely need to fix the Windows XP bootloader, as it will likely have been overwritten by the Win98 mbr. You can use tools in the Windows XP Recovery Console to fix that, or run a repair install of XP -- either of these, when successful, should yield a useful dual boot. XP Recovery Console details --- http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;314058 --- for your situation, look at the details for the fixboot and the bootcfg/rebuild command options. Best of luck . . . Gary

Re: Windows Setup Require 73 freeze
Hey guys:
Thanks for your thoughts. I had an thought to unplug the HD, so I did and my XP rebooted and all was fine and nothing was lost or corrupt. Should've done some research on this first, so am now trying Virtual PC to run Win98. Thanks again, Steve. |

Re: Windows Setup Require 73 freeze
Your welcome,,Old gray gary woke me up on some things there.
Forgot about the chipset not being able to see 98. And the memory thing, 128 was perfect for 98, anything else I dont think it recoginzed and probably slowed it down,,Ahh those were the good ole days! lol Take care,,,
