Msgsrv32 not responding
About 90% of the time, when I am booting up, my computer hangs. I have to hit ctrl alt del and I see Msgsrv32 not responding. Once I close it the computer finishes booting. WHat gives? What should I do?

Could be one of a few different things. If you want to elminate spyware as the cause, please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

What soundcard do you have?
Have you altered any hardware (not necessarily soundcard related) recently? I have observed that changing hardware or reformating can lead to this problem. Mostly its because your soundcard does not have the most recent drivers. Go to your soundcard manufacturer's website and download the most recent driver for your soundcard. Most of the time, this will fix that msgsrv32 error problem. I received numerous startup/shutdown BSOD / fatal exception errors before I updated those soundcard drivers. msgsrv32
I also have this problem with my laptop except after I installed a movie editing program it didn't work. So when I uninstalled it it suddenly auto restarted. Now everytime I start it up when it gets to the desktop it suddenly crashes. How do i fix this? By the way I'm using windows98.

As noted, the most likely explanation would be a virus appending itself to the shell=explorer.exe line so that it reads shell=explorer.exe virus.exe (Where virus is the name of the virus you have) This loads the virus when windows loads. But msgsrv32 is reading this as incorrect loading of explorer.exe and trying to load it, but the virus is stopping it. It can also be caused by a driver failing to load, but not telling windows that it is not loading. Thus msgsrv32 has told it to load and report back , when it fails to report msgsrv32 patiently waits. The solution here is to update the bad driver. Figuring out which one is done by booting to safe mode and taking things like sound card, display adapter , pci card devices and changing them to disable in this profile. When you find out that disabling a particular one solves your problem you can then update its driver. Sometimes just a safe mode boot and select all of the above items and remove/uninstall in device manager and let windows redetect them solves the problem.
