Hi,

When one opens the case for sound problems, the first thing to look at is the little sound cable between the cdrom and the motherboard. These little cables have a way of working loose on both the drive and the motherboard.

hmm do you have on board sound or a sound card installed?
if it's onboard check your bios and make sure it's enabled. check your device manager for any problems and insure that it detects a sound device. also let us know if you've installed any new equipment or programs lately. I've seen programs like paltalk can really mess up sound properties on some systems. Also you can go through the sound troubleshooter in OS help and support.
