i have a problem with my other PC.
its an old PC. Its Windows Me && GenuineIntel. there's no ethernet and USB port. ===================================================== the problem is,i cannot play any sound. even after following the troubleshoot method. here how's it happen : *i reformat and reinstall the pc from 98 to Me. *then it ask for drivers (of course by refering to the exclamation symbol in the Device Managaer). *it asked for PCI Communications Device Driver && Audio Driver. *i found, installed & solved the PCI Communications Device Driver. *i also found the driver for the Audio Driver. *Its Xwave FM801. *but the thing is,after i installed the audio driver,i still can't play any audio. *i checked the Device Manager, and i found another error. *its under the Sounds, video & game controller, that is FM801 PCI Audio. *i doubled click it and it says i didn't have all the drivers installed. Note! ~i cannot update the windows because i can't get to access to the internet without the ethernet port. ~i knew the type of the drivers i needed by using the 'UnknownDevice.exe' program.(it can tells me all the type of hardware i'm using.) ~everytime my pc starts, there's an error message pop-out.it says that i need DirectX to make DirectSound applications work.but the thing is,i have DirectX V8 in my pc. (?) So Please Guys Or Anybody,Please Help Me :( ASAP :( p/s : i hope i've gave all the informations needed. |

Re: Audio Problem.
Hi shakree42
If your PC is a major-brand -- what make/model is it? Many of the drivers are still available for download, even for 'classic' machines. Visit the support website of the PC's manufacturer & search by your exact model number (some vendors also have specific numbers called "service tags"). You mention that you solved the PCI Communications driver --- did it turn out to be a modem? How certain are you that the "UnknownDevice" utility detected the correct audio hardware? Did you inspect the sound card itself (or the onboard sound chip on the motherboard) to double-check? [Can't hurt]. It's also possible that your download simply wasn't a full driver, or a problem could have occured in the downloading or installation. Once you have double-checked that the hardware is an exact-match, look again for a complete driver download, & download it. Then: 1) Boot into Safe Mode. (start tapping the F8 key as your PC is powering on) 2) Go into Device Manager and remove all sound devices listed. (Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager). 3) Reboot into normal mode, and cancel any New Hardware Found screens. 4) Install your newly downloaded driver. Best of luck! . . . Gary P.S. ... for Windows Me, you'll likely want a "WDM" driver. (That's a "Windows Driver Model" that debuted with Windows Me... most such drivers have the .wdm file-extension).

Re: Audio Problem.
thx for reply OldGrayGary,
i've opened the PC and just found a number, not the manufacturer. the number is ATC6310M. ya,the PC model is not a branded one.... about the PCI Communications driver, ya,its a modem, actually i didn't need it much. its just i dont want to see any conflict in the device manager. i dont know if its true or not that the "UnknownDevice" utility detected the correct audio hardware, i just do a search in google,& found i need this utility to inspect the type of the audio hardware without opening the PC. (i never open the PC before...) i also thought that i occured a problem in the downloading & installation progress, but i download & install plenty of time. but still its not working. how do i find the "WDM" driver? p/s : i dont know which one is the sound card,so i can't tell you the sound card type. sorry. |

Re: Audio Problem.
Hi again
I haven't found anything easy to get to yet, in the way of Windows Me drivers. Did you identify that number by physically inspecting the card? (There is usually some sort of model number printed on the card's circuit board, or attached on a sticker). I'll guess that you've a Yamaha version of a 'ForteMedia' sound chip evidently called the FM801. A gang of different versions seem to have made their way to market. Strangely enough, the XP drivers are easier to find (unfortunately, they won't work with your WinMe system). I've also seen a few Win98se versions of the drivers - they might work (and they might not). You can try searching through & trying some of the drivers at driverguide.com --- they have a fairly reputable site, and you can use the free-registration version. If you can get a definite make/model for the card, that'd be your best chance. Best of luck . . . Gary

Re: Audio Problem.
Hi All,
Don't forget to try the maker of the chip set on the board. Check the large chip on the board for the name and part no. and go to the makers site or search driversguide for it. They gave the board maker the driver. Luck, Jim |
