Re: update for compaq presario
You stated you were having issues with a trojan horse yesterday did you get that resolved?
What kind of updates are you referring to? Memory? OS? What is the model of the Compaq Presario?

Re: update for compaq presario
If you're thinking about upgrading the hardware in your computer, then you might consider looking at getting a new one since virtually all presario models use the lovely custom motherboard that isn't easily upgradeable. Getting a new one would also get you a new clean OS with all the drivers. Since you can get them fairly cheap now, you'd save yourself the hassle of upgrading hardware, reinstalling windows, installing drivers, running service packs, and all the other headaches that most consumers have when doing the same thing.
Just an idea.

Re: update for compaq presario
I guess perhaps I'm not understanding what it is you're looking for. You state that you want "pretty much a full computer update designed for windows xp", yet you don't want to replace the motherboard. The only real option other than a new motherboard/cpu, would be to upgrade the CPU itself, but if the motherboard is old then you'd most likely only gain a few hundred Mhz in speed since you could only use an outdated CPU on the old motherboard in your machine. If we try it another way, what is it you're hoping to achieve? More speed for gaming? Better video? More HD space?

Re: update for compaq presario
Hi ben, Hi all
ben - if you only need to update the version of Windows currently installed = just visit Windows Update, it will provide any updates it detects are necessary (Win9x/Me patches through mid-2006, or if you have WinXP - all patches up till now). The hp.com support website (as hp bought Compaq) should have any driver updates that you might need. Search by your exact model number. If the PC is over five or six years old, it's likely best to leave the current OS installed & just clean it up a bit. For older Win9x machines, Win2000 can be a better choice than XP - but neither are free. Not a good idea to spend much money on an older PC, as more and more parts tend to start failing the closer the computer gets to it's tenth birthday. Best of luck . . . Gary P.S. ... another good choice for older systems is to choose a lite version of Linux = which is available for free.
