Angry Hard drive space issues

My name is Caleb Koh but I prefer not to be in the limelight, so please use CK to call me.

I really need help as my Windows 98SE is extremely (not just very, but) cranky and bugged up.

My problems are numerous but the most pertinent one now is my second partition (20 gigs each) whereby I get the message that my hard disk is full and it shows me a screen with "disk cleanup" and yada yada yada

What is worrying is every time I delete a file from my D drive (my second partition), it updates me that now my space has been freed maybe by a few or many megabytes. Yet, in spite of this, 20 minutes after that (be it on the computer or not), it will popup the same system message annnnnnnnnd when I right-click on my D drive to check the space free, it frickin' shows 0 bytes. What the hell is going on?!?! ARGH

Yours truly,
CK

Re: Hard drive space issues

Hi CK

A few questions:
1) Does this system dual-boot with any other operating systems?
2) What tool was used to create the partitions? Is a partitioning program installed (such as Partition Magic)?
3) Was a "drive-overlay" program needed to help an older motherboard work with the large hard drive? (such as "EZ-Bios", "Disk Manager", etc.).
4) If you boot into Safe Mode (tap the F8 key while the computer is starting up), do the partition sizes report normally?
5) How full is the problematic partition? If you are only able to free a small amount of space each time, could logs and temporary files be filling that space up again?
6) Have you scanned for malware yet? (Some malware, especially the trojan-horse attacks, can store data on your PC ... often to be sent as spam, as part of a "botnet").

Take a look in Safe Mode, and try a scan or two - and see if anything turns up.

Best of luck
. . . Gary
