Evil AHH! Illegal operation explorer and other problems!

I have a windows 98 gateway computer. About 6 months ago, upon booting, I started
getting messages that nwlink.vxd was missing, as well as vserver.vxd . I didn't know
how to fix it, and didn't have alot of time to, so i laid it off. ON JANUARY 1st
at 12:00 am, new years, I booted it and was asked for the windows registration code.
I gave it,(It is on a sticker on the side of my computer.)I thought it was extremely
strange. From then on, I couldn't get the computer to boot. It always does this when
it boots:

#1: I get a message saying that Norton Antivirus wasn't able to determine the location
of configuration files. [Ok]

#2: SoundBlaster Audio PCID Driver cannot load MIDI Waveset. MIDI Playback has been
disabled.

#3: Explorer has performed an illegal operation and must be shut down. [OK]

#4: When I press ok, the only thing apparent is my desktop background picture. Thats
it.

*** I searched the internet for solutions, but tried everything I found. I tryed
to hold CTRL down on startup, as well as F8, to get the Safe mode. However, if I
hold a key down, it tells me that it has detected the mouse, but there was a keyboard
error, and goes about performing an illegal operation anyway.

*** When I have the windows 98 disk in, I ALWAYS get a screen asking whether to boot
up from the hard drive or from the disk.
A: If i boot from the hard drive I get the same results
B: If I boot from the CD, it tells me that it is going to ERASE EVERYTHING,
and to make sure that there isn't any files that I need to keep. THAT'S THE WHOLE
REASON I NEED THIS COMPUTER TO START UP in the first place!!! SO I can get the files!!!

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Boot to a 98 boot disk, at the command prompt type in scanreg /restore
You'll be given a choice of dates. Select one and click Restore.
