Installing 98 onto Vista PC
I just bought a preinstalled Vista PC. I would like to uninstall Vista and install Windows 98.
I DO NOT want to run Windows 98 as a Vista Virtual PC. I want to totally get rid of Vista and install Windows 98 instead. Any thoughts on how to do that? |

Re: Installing 98 onto Vista PC
Hi jeongf
It's highly unlikely you could successfully install Windows 98 on a brand-new Vista-ready PC. There just aren't any suitable Windows 98 drivers for the hardware. CPUs faster than 2ghz need a special patch. Most nForce chipsets after nForce2 haven't had Win98 drivers available at all. Special settings need to be added to system.ini (the vcache section) to limit Win98 to the first 512mb on systems with more than 512mb of memory ... the list of problems goes on and on.... The emulated 98 isn't that bad ... I believe that by default it emulates an old Trident video. Best of luck . . . Gary [strangely enough: if the new Vista machine is a laptop = there's a possiblility that even going back to Windows XP could be a problem, due to lack of driver support]

Re: Installing 98 onto Vista PC
I agree with the previous response. I doubt you will find win98 drivers for your pc. In addition you will need the full retail version of win98 since you cannot use oem or any version that was purchased with a computer.
Depending upon the reason for getting rid of vista, maybe give linux a try...

Re: Installing 98 onto Vista PC
On a good majority of the newer PC's its even hard to find XP drivers sometimes.. they are just not always made, as the machine was designed and built for vista.

Re: Installing 98 onto Vista PC
Most folks that deal with malware consider Windows 98 unsafe anymore as there are no real updates issued.
I don't really care for Vista either, but also did not like XP until I learned about it. Probably should have continued your other thread here: How to uninstall Vista and install Windows 98 BG

Re: Installing 98 onto Vista PC
Hello,
Looking up certain information on this thread, yes, it is almost impossible to install W98/SE on a vista ready computer because on vista ready computers the drivers for vista have been loaded and if you were to load W98/SE onto a vista ready computer, you would be getting BSOD's generated almost everytime you start up your computer because the hardware does not have the default drivers or the drivers are not supported by W98/SE, so my choice would be to stay with the vista ready computer for your own safety and to save you money of making people pay you around $200-300 to re-install windows vista for you. |

Re: Installing 98 onto Vista PC
What........? Install XP but to go back to win 98 would be a great loss for you! would it work? hmmmmmm maybe but the compatability with most parts would be a big issue, if it did work even with all the updates out I wish you the best.

Re: Installing 98 onto Vista PC
Hi kubajz
No chance to have Windows 98 run natively on your new Hp Vista laptop (the hardware is simply not supported at all). But Windows 98 might run just fine in emulation. You mentioned you tried to "downgrade" -- I'll assume, then, that you've erased your earlier Vista installation. If so: 1) Either restore a Disk-Image backup of your hard drive from when Vista was installed (such images can be made with programs such as Norton Ghost, Acronis True Image, and Vista's own built-in Backup [but only for the Ultimate, Business, & Enterprise 'editions' -- it's called "Complete PC Backup"] ) . . . or run the Hp-supplied "Recovery Disk" (some Hp models require you to create your own ... if this is the case with yours, and you neglected to make a Recovery set, you can order Recovery Disks directly from Hp for a small fee [around $20]). 2) Download and install Microsoft's Virtual PC 2007 --- http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en 3) Install Windows 98 as a virtual operating system within Virtual PC 2007. 4) Install your Windows-98 program in your virtual Windows 98 environment in Virtual PC 2007. Best of luck . . . Gary

Re: Installing 98 onto Vista PC
Hi pcimaging
Microsoft's Virtual PC only runs on versions of Windows (full details in the "system requirements" section of the webpage for Virtual PC 2007 in the link above). I believe VMWare can run on most any platform ... and they have a version called "VMWare Fusion" designed specifically for Macs. For Linux, there are free virtual environment tools (of course) -- one of the better-known is 'Xen'. Best of luck! . . . Gary

Re: Installing 98 onto Vista PC
Hi Jeon,
Just a thought. You mentioned that 98 would not load on the machine. No earlier version of Windows will load over a later one. You always have to clean the drive first. Think twice about it. Look at all the help you already have. Good Luck, Jim |
