[SOLVED] images have disappeared from Outlook Express

The images have disappeared (to be replaced by an image outline enclosing a red "x") from Outlook Express. I believe (although not certain) this happened after I installed the latest version of Spybot Search and Destroy. I did some research, and found that there were 2 possible causes:

1. In OE, tools - options - connections - change - advanced - multimedia - show pictures not checked. It was checked.

2. In OE, tools - options - security - Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail checked. Sadly, this check box doesn't even exist in my OE.

I tried completely uninstalling Spybot, and reinstalling OE, without success. My version of OE is 6.00.2800.1123.

Any suggestions? TIA.

Re: images have disappeared from Outlook Express

I am not familiar with detect and repair. I can find no reference to in in OE. The web references I find are all about the Office suite or a product called scandbx.

I do not think that I want to do a registry restore, since I am not sure when the problem first appeared.

Re: images have disappeared from Outlook Express

The reinstall worked, thanks!

Now, I had reinstalled OE before I posted my first message, although without resetting the flag described in your link, but it didn't help. So, it seems that some reinstalls are different than others. Can you explain to me what the purpose of this magical hidden flag? Other than to raise my blood pressure, of course! TIA.

Re: [SOLVED] images have disappeared from Outlook Express

The registry entry described in your link:

If you are having problems only with Outlook Express 6, proceed as follows:

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}
Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.
Data Type: DWORD // Value Name: IsInstalled
Setting for Value Data: [Change the Value from 1 to 0]
Exit Registry

Because you modified the Registry key

Yes, of course. But why was a registry modification necessary? What is the difference between a reinstall without the registry modification and the reinstall with the registry modification? I mean, other than the fact that the first didn't work. Why this complication? It is completely intuitive to reinstall a program when it is acting up, but I can't say that needing first to make a change to:

{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}

is very intuitive!

The reinstall may not have replaced the key, hence the need to edit it....I really do not know the actual answer

OK, no problem. You resolved the main issue for me, and that is the important thing. Thanks again.
