Re: Icons
That doesn't work. It is a file I made in Ms Works. For some reason all my works files now show a white page with the windows logo on them. If I right click on it and chose properties and custom a screen comes up with a place to put Name. Type, Value, and Properties. No change icon button.

Re: Icons
Ah, well, for that you need third party software as far as I know.
http://www.freeware-guide.com/dir/de...icontools.html might have something to help you.

Re: Icons
Hi all
joncoy -- I suspect the problem you are describing has to do with a mixup in the settings for your file associations. It isn't that you need to alter or create an icon, you just need to restore the file association & its associated icon. Microsoft Works has several file-extensions. For each extension (wps, wks, etc.) that is showing the wrong icon, visit its settings ---> 1) Open Windows Explorer. 2) From the "View" menu, choose "Folder Options". 3) Select the "File Types" tab. 4) Scroll down the list of file types, and select the one you wish to fix. 5) Select the "Change" button 6) Select the "Change Icon" button. 7) From the displayed icons available, select an appropriate icon. 8) Select OK. ... Should Windows inform you that it cannot find the file containing the icon when you are selecting it, use the "Browse" button - and navigate to the executable for that program. Most Microsoft Works and Office programs contain icons in their main executable (such as winword.exe for Word). Once you select the main executable, a windows of icons available should display, select the one you prefer, and click OK. If you then refresh your current screen, you should see the correct icons. That should do it. Best of luck . . . Gary

When I try to open my ms works files it says it can not find this Î’MSWORKS.EXE (The white square is a vertical black line when it comes up). Does anyone know what this is or how to get rid of it? When it comes up I then open the file (shift-right click-open with) with Ms Works and it will then open. This is a follow up from my last two posts.

Re: Icons
Gary
Thanks for your help. That changed all the files to the Ms Works logo. Now when I make a word processor file I get the same icon as when I make a spreadsheet file. I hope I am explaining this stuff correctly as I am not all hip when it comes to the computer. |

Re: Icons
Hi again
I was thinking about it ... and it might be that the fastest path to fixing your MS Works associations would simply be to reinstall Works. That would set up the default associations & restore the proper icons. Techs are used to pointing file associations to executables & selecting icons & all that, but most folks aren't interested in hunting down which Works executable goes with which file association and icon. I think in this case the easy way might be the best. See if that works out. . . . Gary
