Got a working Orange Broadband connection via Wanadoo Livebox and XP Service Pack2 machine - all tickety-boo. Also, can connect with my Laptop (built-in Wireless) running Vista Home.
Trying to get an old Win98SE machine with a D-Link Wireless-G USB Adapter to share the connection. Adapter installed and configured without any problems. Win98 can see the Livebox via the wireless adapter with a signal-strenght around 80% and connects successfully via the D-Link software, but IE reports 404 for every web-page tried. ![]() Cannot PING the Livebox (address 192.168.1.1). Tried setting up a DNS Gateway using Livebox address (confirmed IP settings via WINIPCFG), but still no joy connecting to Internet...!? Anyone any idea how to connect the Win98 to the Internet (apparently successfully connected to the Livebox)...?

Re: Wireless Windows 98SE
Hi Morken
Any firewalls involved? I'm not familiar with the Wanadoo Livebox - but if it has a built-in hardware firewall, check the settings. If you are filtering wireless connections by MAC address, for example, you'd need to add the MAC address of the Dlink wireless adapter on the Win98se box. If you are running any software firewall, you might need to enter the LiveBox IP as a Safe zone. I did glance at a Wanadoo forum -- some Win98se users reported trouble if their wireless adapters weren't plugged into USB 2.0 ports. Many USB ports on Win98se PCs would still be USB 1.1 - but you can add USB 2.0 via an add-on PCI card. Some other Win98se LiveBox users had better luck when they reinstalled their Win98se wireless adaptor drivers. Of course, anytime when using wireless, any security encription settings, passkeys, and SSID information, have to match exactly. And, of course, it's often true that when you make a system change in Win98se, a reboot is necessary before your changes take effect. Best of luck . . . Gary

Re: Wireless Windows 98SE
You can or you cannot ping the Livebox from the PC Win98SE ?
Your livebox is a Sagem or an Inventel ? Basically the livebox has a WEP key activated and MAC filtering activated. Go to the livebox from another PC (type 192.168.1.1 on url in internet explorer windows) and check what i am saying. Sorry for my English , i know it is not wery well. |
