I'm puzzled . I have tried and at present failed to install an etherent card (purchased from maplin but i think that it is a realtek RT8139/810x) on my fathers parkard bell spirit running 98se. Yes he is changing to broadband, its never to late!, and i felt that the best way to do this would be a card. I had heard that wireless usb and usb etherent adapters were less likely to work with 98se. Anyway, placed card in a spare slot and booted up, new hardware ..... good, wizard .... have disk, put disk in autorun driver/software loads but then asks for 98se disks!? didn't have any, so had to stop. located some disks at home and went back the following day. computer did not boot well and asked for missing files

and many more, well 10 more,

can't get the card recognised now or the driver loaded. I have taken the card out, but am still getting file requests as above. How do i get back to normal and try fitting the card again. If the files it is requsting are the only files needed from the 98se disk where can i get these from if their not on the disks i found?
sorry loads of questions, can anyone help.

The files in the list are Windows 98 Networking files.

If you've a suitable Win98 CD (or have the Win98 "cab" files stored on the hard drive in C:\Windows\Options\Cabs), Try:
1) Boot into Safe Mode (start tapping the F8 as the computer is starting up)
2) Remove your new network card if it shows in Device Manager (it may show as either a network card, or it might show as an "Unknown Device"). (To reach Device Manager, right-click the "My Computer" icon & select Properties - then choose Device Manager).
3) Reboot the computer into normal mode, and this time when the New Hardware Found wizard asks for the Win98 CD, put the CD in the CD-drive, or point the wizard to the place on your hard drive that the Win98 .cabs are stored.

That should do it.
