Missing systems in Windows 95

I have a pro link computer running windows 95 but I am unable to get into windows. During startup, it said "CMOS checksum error - Defaults loaded.
CMOS battery failed"

When I continued, it said without any disc or floppy inside,
Starting windows 95...

The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\SAMPLE.SYS
There is an error in your CONFIG.SYS file on line 1.

The following file is missing or corrupted: C:\CDROM\WCD.SYS
There is an error in your CONFIG.SYS file on line 2.

The following file is missing or corrupted: COMMAND.COM
Type the name of the Command Interpretor (e.g., C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM)
C>

I tried the installion floppy and type
A:> C:
C:> dir /p

I then saw a list of folders and files with the windows folder inside and typed
C:>cd\Windows
C:\Windows>win

But the real problem came when it said
Windows not shut down properly...one or more of your diskdrives my have errors...ask to run scandisk.exe.
Scandisk.exe not found...may have problems on the disk (which I believe so)...Press any key to continue windows..
HIMEM.SYS is missing.
Make sure that the file is in the Windows directory

C:\Windows>

I have no clue what the problem is or what to type next. Thanks in advance to anyone to stop this comp from corrupting my mind.

Re: Missing systems in Windows 95

Hi uthopia

Before anything else, you need to see if the hardware is still sound.

Right off the bat - it's rather obvious you need a new CMOS battery. Here's a tutorial from hp/Compaq that applies to most older computers - giving all the details on how to replace the battery --- http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...&product=94878 --- Once you've got the new battery in (which should only cost about $1.50, by the way = usually a 3v coin battery such as the CR-2032), you'll need to enter Bios Setup to set the time/date, along with the other settings. You can use your favorite search engine to find a manual for your system, and use the suggested Bios settings in it, and/or refer to Adrian's famous Bios Optimization Guide for more advanced Bios Setup help --- http://www.techarp.com/freebog.aspx

Then -
Test the memory --- http://www.memtest.org
Test the hard drive --- http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

It's highly likely that Windows-95 era hardware is reaching the end of its useful span. If you are attempting to run Windows 95 on newer hardware (anything from the last five or six years) -- I'd recommend using Virtual PC 2004, and installing Windows 95 in a virtual environment.

If older basic components test OK, what disks do you have available, if any, to repair Windows with?
. . . Gary
