Problem installing IE6 on Win ME

Didn't know if I should have put this in here or the Internet Explorer section...

Finished all the Windows ME updates except the IE6. IE6 starts to install, goes to about 90% then a dialogue box pops up indicating "Setup was unable to install all the componants. Please close all applications and try running setup again".

Yes this is that same HP computer I earlier cleaned "stuff" off of and fixed after the newdotnet event.

On restarting the install I'm required to restart the computer first.

This message comes up every time after restarting the computer, resuming setup, starting setup from beginning, typical setup and custom setup (selecting just IE6).

Nothing except the required things are running according to processexplorer.exe.

Tryed it in safe mode also with same results.

Will continue looking for a procedure I have not tryed yet while waiting for help.

I might have to start a new thread for this one, don't know yet, lol. I tryed installing Symantec Antivirus also and the setup requires a Root Certificate Update to work. Tryed looking at windowsupdate.com for information about it with no luck. Alot of text about servers and networks though...

Thanks

Dennis

Re: Problem installing IE6 on Win ME

Is this a clean install of IE or an upgrade from 5?

Re: Problem installing IE6 on Win ME

Hi Aviator

Did you use the direct download from Microsoft's download site, or try things from Windows Update? If you didn't try the direct download yet, try that --- http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Might have to check for rootkits if your getting unexpected activity interrupting installs. MS/SysInternals "Rootkit Revealer" is a good start for that. (Available at the same site that has ProcessExplorer). There's a brand-new MBR rootkit exploit that has just come up in the past month or so - but I'm not sure if Win9x/Me systems are vulnerable (XP & Vista systems can be) --- http://www.news.com/8301-10789_3-984...?tag=cnetfd.mt --- the funny part is: it's a simple matter to write a fresh mbr on a Win9x/Me system (the fdisk/mbr command) -- I haven't had to fuss with a Vista MBR yet: looks like I've got some security homework ahead.

If the just cleaned WinMe system hasn't been to Windows Update yet, try visiting there until all the Critical Patches are up-to-date (up through mid-2006 anyway) - & then try the direct download for IE6 and see if it installs OK. I'd have you try a run of System File Checker or Windows File Protection to check on your system files, but unfortunately Windows ME has neither of those, and instead features the somewhat clumsy "System File Protection" -- which doesn't allow you to manually run a scan for corrupted system files (the others all allow such manual scans).

I'm assuming that you've scanned with a few different malware scanners already. If you haven't got around to that yet, give it a go. The Security forums here at TSF are pretty good for detecting trouble, if you want to have them look at a HiJack This log --- http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...oval-help.html

That PC is keeping you busy!

Re: Problem installing IE6 on Win ME

I have all kind of things to keep me busy. Been playing computer tech unofficially for a few years now though, was kind of wondering if I know enough to make it officiall yet, lol. Haven't taken any exams yet but the A+ looks easy, but anyways...

Yes I scanned a few times, but with just Symantec Antivirus. According to them It looks like I got rid of all the threats the first time through. I don't know whether or not to trust the free scanners that are becomming popular now...I had to fix a couple machines already that had something called AVG on it, kind of got me a bad feeling about them lol. But I don't know.

Yes the microsoft update is the first site I went to after I got rid of the mess newdotnet made. And as I said on the first post everything except IE6 updated/installed. I haven't found where to install the whole program yet (as I normally would be able to with a single file download) as that update site just gives us that 480kb file (or whatever the size was) to download more data from the site, but I have located where the rest of the files downloaded to in c:\windows\windowsupdate....

So I gave it a try in safe mode a few times and still indicates I must close all programs. I even went back to the processexplorer to see what else I can close (and actually started closing them, watch as Windows crashes haha) and got no where.

I took a break hours ago from that machine to study other things so I'm a bit tired of thinking right now lol. I'll get back here later after I wake up. Thanks for the information.

Re: Problem installing IE6 on Win ME

Ahh, I didn't notice the second site for downloading IE6, but I jsut tryed it, I got the same 480kb file as in windowsupdates, that after executing, it downloads, rather than just downloading the whole program as an install file.

I just realised why I had a headache last night, I was staring at a 60Hz display too long. lol. I once had an 85Hz display but it stopped working, I haven't taken it apart yet for inspection so I'm stuck with slow refresh rates CRTs...anywats.

Got some reading to do for MBRs, in the years I've been fixing computer I haven't had anything to do with those yet.

I still have a root certificate update dialog box to entertain, can't install the Symantec Antivirus I have on the machine until I figure out what that's about.

Re: Problem installing IE6 on Win ME

After some time of searching around the internet for this "Root certificate update" dialgue box while trying to install Symantec Antivirus (causing it to not install) I eventually found something that fixed it.

http://www.download.windowsupdate.co...1104eef90c.exe

I just executed the file, than went right back to antivirus install. Since then I have installed the updates, restarted computer, and it's scanning now.

Back to that IE6 not installing becuse it see's something open that I don't see....

Do you know what files it might be trying to write to or requiring access, maybee if I knew that I could be looking for corrupt files instead of what's open, search continues (slowly as I have my fiddle in hand, playing, lol).

Re: Problem installing IE6 on Win ME

Hi again

It's tricky to find anti-malware programs that are still updated for Windows 9x/Me --- what version of Norton did you find that's compatible with WinMe? Assuming that you indeed found a compatible version, and need to resolve the root certificates issue, you can directly download the WinMe root certificate update from the following link --- http://download.windowsupdate.com/ms...n/rootsupd.exe

If you find that your Norton doesn't support Win9x/Me anymore, AVG Free Edition still does, and still provides updated virus definitions for it. It is a well-rated program, many such free-for-personal-use programs rate just as well (and some better) as it's full-priced competitors. The usual business model of such companies is to get recognition and build brand-awareness with a free personal version, and then offering "professional" versions that carry a regular retail price (the 'pro' versions usually offer features not available in the free-personal versions). At any rate, AVG is also valued for the fact that is has lighter resource needs than the average Norton product, and is often a better choice for older systems. If you're interested in trying AVG, the free version download is here --- http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Vir...-10788045.html

Sorry that even the direct download for IE6 from the MS download site only provides the tiny applet that then has to connect and grab the files. It turns out that there is a trick to download it -- which is detailed in it's entirety here --- http://www.broomeman.com/support/wsiedown.html ---

In short, you create a little folder (C:\Downloads) to save the files in, and then you start the tiny little ie6setup.exe - this produces an option box, into which you enter "C:\Downloads\ie6setup.exe" /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E" - exactly as you see it here, quotations and all. Then accept the license agreement, select your Windows version, select your download location (C:\Downloads\Internet Explorer 6 SP1), and click Next. After the new ie6setup has downloaded, double-click it to start the installation.

I've had a full version burned onto a CD for so long that I've forgotten when I made it.

Best of luck!
. . . Gary

late edit --- I started this earlier in the afternoon, and then was interrupted for quite a while --- so I just now saw your latest post -- I see you also found the direct link to the root certificates. Sorry for the redundancy.

Re: Problem installing IE6 on Win ME

I'll try that after the virus scan is done. I had a Symantec Antivirus version 9 I put on there. A few years old. I noticed the newer ones don't support ME but this one does. And updated virus definitions to today.

My last attempt at installing IE6 (just before I searched for root certificate and installed, then started scanning) I had Process monitor running so I could see what it looked like. everything appeared to have SUCCESS except for a few things which where NOT FOUND, then one with a 0xE for the status bar. I coulden't find that file or the not found ones on the HD.

Mean anything?

Also I was wondering that instead of looking for programs that where running, maybee I should be looking for corrupt or used files, if I knew which files the installer would be modifying, deleting, replacing etc (like I typed in the last post).

That's alright I think there's alot of redundencies here lol. Always good in case it was missed the first time?

Re: Problem installing IE6 on Win ME

Hi again

Why not give the full-download ahead-of-time trick a try? The files not found during an installation might not be the best of signs (but -depending on where you saw the message - might just be the IE installer checking to see what needs updating and what doesn't). Your choice on that. Definitely try the full-download if IE throws up errors.

Theoretically, WinMe's "System File Protection" is supposed to always be checking for corrupted or missing files. Theoretically, that's why Microsoft didn't include a built-in user's-choice manual scan for system file integrity (such as the Win98/98se's "System File Checker", or the 2000/XP/Vista's Windows File Protection "sfc /scannow" command). I think it was a mistake on Microsoft's part not to include user-initiated scanning for system file integrity in Windows Me. From their choices prior and since, I think they learned their lesson :)

Best of luck
. . . Gary

Re: Problem installing IE6 on Win ME

Virus scan just completed, found just one threat (the newdotnet I still had in the recycle, I wanted to make sure it was working, deleted now).

I did not save the log (if it was possible, didn't check at the time) when I was running Processmonitor when I was trying to see what would happen during the IE6 install. That's when I found root certificate and installed Antivirus (took a break from IE6, accomplished one of my objectives though which just leaves this one now).

Giving the IE6 another try via the commands, will be back in a few minutes.

Was I saying process monitor all that time? I ment Filemonitor.

Well, tryed it again a few times. It downowded, so I'll zip and store it someplace. But I still get the same error.
