Exclamation [SOLVED] Will 98 read and XP drive?

Hi - I'm sorting out a friend's old XP system, which has died (power supply I suspect, although the drive was in pretty rough shape due to often hanging at boot up (apparently)).

I've taken it out to put into another system to get the old files off of it, but the only system they have I can use is an old Windows 98SE one. It's in, and at boot up the computer knows it's there, but Windows 98 seems unable to recognise it. Anybody have any experience with this? Can 98 read an XP drive?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Will 98 read and XP drive?

98 probably is having a hard time with the ntfs. Xp can read fat32.,
but I doubt that 98 recognizes ntfs, I could be wrong, but that
is my thinking.

Manic is (of course) right. Windows 98 can't "see" NTFS partitions.

Try this: http://www.softlookup.com/display.asp?id=25391

Re: Will 98 read and XP drive?

yup...it seems there is nothing problem with the XP archive or something, but just simply the partition that doesn't recognized by 98SE. you can try to use the software suggested by eneles, if it doesn't work, u have to use the computer which have at least win2k or above to get the files out of that drive

This is a demo version of another program: http://www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...load-1181.html

Or - see if you can retrieve the data with Recuva.

Re: Will 98 read and XP drive?

Try to download NTFS for 98 from this site, and then see whether it works.

NTFS FOR WINDOWS 98

If it doesn't, the only thing you can do, is to try mount the hard drive to the computer which is running Windows 2000 or above.

Hope this helps

Re: Will 98 read and XP drive?

Thanks all - it's really appreciated. I reluctantly ended up dragging the drive home and putting it into my XP system. I figured the NTFS/FAT32 issue was the problem, and hadn't checked your post re: Recuva, etc., but will bear ll that in mind in case I come across this again sometime.

Thanks again.
