Re: win Me and 9se too slow, freezes
Hi msmel
AOL 9 is a heavy load for any Win9x/Me system. If it has the included built-in "AOL Security Center" software loaded in as well, it's a fairly large load on an older PC, and if there were other security (anti-malware) programs already loaded onto the PC, conflicts and inefficiencies are a common problem. For most Win9x/Me users, I usually advise the complete uninstallation of all AOL software (you DO need to have some protections in place on ANY PC, though, so be sure to have a firewall & antivirus installed and running whether or not you keep AOL). You can continue to receive your AOL mail, using your existing AOL account names and passwords, by accessing your mail through their webmail link on aol.com. To keep AOL 9 & it's Security Center running on a WinMe PC, I'd expect you'd need upwards of 256mb of system memory, and around 500mhz Pentium III or better, and a hard drive with some reasonable room left (AOL tends to have a lot of temp files that it is slow about refreshing). You might have success in speeding up your computer by trimming your background processes. There are still good guides available to help with that --- http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm --- and good sites to help you identify the programs loading at startup --- http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php --- http://www.answersthatwork.com/ --- (use the TaskList at answersthatwork) Also - run antimalware scans to rule out infections as a contributing cause of system slowness and instability. And - remember to check out the hardware angle (as I mentioned in your earlier post ... I'll paste it in here as well) --- Checking your hardware: Check the memory --- http://www.memtest.org Check the hard drive --- http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 Check the Bios --- find a manual for your make/model (search engines are good for that) & check the Bios Setup. Especially ensure that the time/date are correct, if slipping backwards, the CMOS battery likely needs replacing. Best of luck . . . Gary

Re: win Me and 9se too slow, freezes
Hi again
Most of the low-cost Internet providers have plans for around $10 (USD) a month - for unlimited dial-up service --- http://www.getisp.info/dial-up.html --- One often overlooked service is AOL's "Netscape" service, for $9.95 --- http://getnetscape.com/ --- You shouldn't have to be stuck with a near-$20 monthly fee if all you want is inexpensive dial-up. As far as using them with WinMe: you'd have to check the "system requirements" for their software packages before committing to a contract. Support for the Win9x/Me versions of Windows is fast disappearing, but some providers still have software that will work with their service. Earthlink & some others, in fact, work with Linux as well --- And Linux is a platform that you might consider if you'd like access to an open source operating system with a wealth of open source programs -- nearly all of which are free-of-charge. Older versions of Linux might run very well on an older computer, and you could use open-source security programs -- all for very little cost (if any). _______________ Also ---> Don't forget to give your system a malware-checkup and a hardware-checkup. Best of luck! . . . Gary

Re: win Me and 9se too slow, freezes
your aol 9.0 has aol 8.0 on it. when you insert your 9.0 after you have uninstalled it, hit ctrl-alt-del to end task on 9.0. Go start run whatever your cd drive is like d: Open the 8.0 folder and hit setup.8.0 will not put a load on your system.
