Twisted OK I got 98SE working--with bugs?

maybe my BIOS settings still aren't correct- for those of you who missed the last thread, I changed the BIOS in my Hewlett Packard 8380 for an AWARD BIOS rather than the limited Phoenix junk. I don't care what HP tech support says- it can be done, I've almost made a complete success of the swap. What do I need to config in BIOS or in Windows 98se? This is the problem: my USB stuff is acting funny, like slowing the system down when I put my card reader with the five little removable drives from SanDisk. Other USB devices will cause the sound card splash logo to come on when plugging into root usb hub. I have an SBLive! 5.1 surround card with Kxproject drivers. What is ISA mem block, what's an ICU (and how do properly set these in BIOS? I'm running the FSB at 100MHz with a 450MHz processor (it came with a 400MHz) and I have an 80G western digital WD800jb HDD on UDMA66(partitioned as per windows 98).Also, I uninstalled the sound card and re-installed, but the program just will not load for my mixer/etc. AND, even though BIOS detects it, Win98se doesn't show my formatted FAT32 slave drive.
I noticed on bootup that the PCI device list shows a couple of Multimedia devices with the same device number (12) and my IDE controller and serial Controller share device number (7). ALL BUS Numbers are at 0 except the onboard ATI Rage Pro Turbo II AGP graphics card. Any ideas? Need more info on my computer? I'll be happy to provide it for you.

Re: OK I got 98SE working--with bugs?

Forgot to mention - But for those out there still tinkering with one of these old HP's, my p2b98-xv MoBo (along with the award BIOS swap-by the way I didn't change the chip) can now over clock a little. Although, not generally recommended at the troubleshooting stage, I wanted to see if it was possible. I upped the FSB Freq in BIOS in the neighborhood of 103-104MHz, rebooted, and Voila!--468MHz. I will be turning that back down now, 'til I get the kinks worked out of BIOS config, and then we'll see how far we can push it (maybe a coolant system or something crazy) lol-- I love doing stuff to my stubborn old clunker :)

Re: OK I got 98SE working--with bugs?

Hi compaqkiller

Just about any questions you might have about Bios settings are likely covered in the somewhat famous "Adrian's Bios Optimization Guide", which has been around - and been constantly updated - for many years --- http://www.techarp.com/freebog.aspx

Set everything back to stock speeds, re-do the drivers for any USB devices present, and see if the external device behavior levels out. USB in Windows 98 is troublesome enough without adding overclocked buses into the mix, so make sure you're driving 55mph like the ancient regime mandated.

You mention a FAT32 formatted slave drive -- is it connected internally or externally, and what size is it?

Best of luck & Happy New Year
. . . Gary
