Re: display problem in dos
Hi all
hr -- I would suspect your monitor more than DOS or Windows. If things are displaying fine in Windows at 1024x768, yet maximized Windows screens and DOS screens are missing edges at 640x480, I'd first expect the problem to resolve itself by using the hardware controls built into the monitor. You should be able to adjust the horizontal width through hardware. What make/model monitor is it? Best of luck . . . Gary

Re: display problem in dos
hi Gary
i already mentioned that the width setting is not available or is set to zero when screen display is set to 640*480. and as the dos works in that mode i m facing the problem. i m currently using samsung syncmaster 794mg and its drivers are installed in windows. also as you suggest i would try another monitor and will see if it works. thanks anyways. |

Re: display problem in dos
Hi again
The Samsung SyncMaster 794/mg & 794/mb were CRT models, I believe - so we aren't talking about an LCD screen, right? In that case, the controls I'm referring to are operating system independent - it doesn't matter what operating system or resolution you are currently using. Unfortunately, Samsung has pulled information for their CRT models from their support website (apparently they are going forward with LCD, etc. screens & leaving the Cathode-Ray-Tubes behind) . . . so I couldn't refer to the procedure for their on-screen display controls. Most CRT models simply use a slider bar (whether a digital onscreen slider, or the older analog mechanical wheel) to adjust screen width & height. Both the button-controlled on-screen controls and the mechanical-wheel-controls are usually located along the bottom front edge of the monitors. I realize that you likely already know this, but I'm puzzled that you report you have no control over horizontal screen width. You should. Are you needing to resize the screen itself, or windows displayed within that screen? Best of luck . . . Gary

Re: display problem in dos
thanks for the concern. quiet right, when you say that i know about those controls. And i am talking about the whole screen and not a window, as i am using the dos in full screen mode. and i already told that the width is already set to zero and the screen ends are not visible in 640*480.

Re: display problem in dos
Hi again
It's been so long on the DOS side of life, that I can't remember changing the refresh rate in DOS --- so I'm going to leave that aside for now. In Windows, it can sometimes help to locate & install an exact-match ".inf" file for your monitor, to make sure that the correct information about your monitor's capabilities is in use. It should list that resolution as a display option, as well as its range of frequencies. Try using the "Advanced" tab in Windows display properties, and try the 640x480 resolution at a different refresh rate. The speed of the refresh rate can affect the horizontal size and placement, which might give you back a little wiggle-room for your monitor's controls (I'll assume the Samsung "horizontal zero" is the equivalent of being at the farthest end of a slider bar, or a mechanical wheel having spun as far as it will go in a particular direction) I'll keep my fingers crossed. . . . Gary

Re: display problem in dos
the problem remained while i toggled with various combinations of screen size and refresh rate. but in the meanwhile i checked another monitor on the system and to my surprise it was working like a charm even i didnt need to install its drivers. Even though the model is bit older one i m going to continue with it, till i think to change the system. Also now i think that may be the samsung monitor or in this case it was hardware conflict. thanks gary and geekgirl for their advices.
