IE causing freezing??

Hi:
Using ME, and am having serious issues w/ computer freezing since yesterday AM. Only seems to happen when Internet Explorer 6 is open and running. I lose the mouse/pointer until I CTRL/ALT/DEL to task manager. Pointer then reappears and I am able to select a "not responding" task. Typically, these include IE windows, Outlook window, CcAPP, and Word/Excel/etc. I can select each task, then End Task, then End Task again. Once all Not Responding tasks have been closed, I am left w/ a blank blue screen and must restart w/ power button.

So the million $ question you may have is what did I do yesterday AM? I searched for all *.tmp files (both hidden and revealed) and deleted them all. This problem surfaced shortly thereafter. And, of course, I emptied the Recycle Bin.

Am running Norton AV, and aside from the same adware threats it has detected for the past 2 months, the system is updated and otherwise clean.

Is there a search I can perform to see what seemingly critical file I deleted yesterday? Any help is greatly appreciated--you've come this far after reading through this diatribe!!

Thanks,
John

My System

I don't know of any program that will tell you what critical files you deleted.

Let's make sure it's not spyware here. Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

My System

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

Go to Start->Settings->Control Panel and double-click on the System icon. On the Performance tab click File System. Click the Troubleshooting tab, and then check Disable System Restore. Click OK. Click Yes, when you are prompted to restart Windows. When we have confirmed that your log file is clean, you may enable System Restore again by following the same steps as above except you should uncheck Disable System Restore .

Download FixAgent and unzip it. Run FixAgent.exe. It should fix something. If nothing is fixed, skip to the next step for the HijackThis fixes. If something is found, also download home_missing_114 and unzip it. Run the Home winkey missing batch file. Remember: only do this if FixAgent found something.

Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IR50_QCX.EXE

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ATPART~1.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\MXTARGET.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ABOD.DLL

C:\WINDOWS\SYSUPD.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\ALCHEM.exe
c:\counter.cab
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ABOD.DLL

Reboot into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log file so we can make sure it's clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Section and use the tools provided.
