New Video Card

hi...im trying to install an ATI Radeon 9250 PCI 256MB video card into my compaq (sorry) presario 4090US. it has an onboard video card, and i have read to remove the driver for my current video card, restart and start up system bios to enable my VGA settings, or something like that. i did all that, but when i try to turn on the computer with the new video card installed (even if the monitor is not plugged into it), the monitor wont turn on. i have the orange light on my monitor, and the computer sounds like it is starting up normally, however my monitor light never goes green. as soon as i turn off the computer and remove the video card, it starts up just fine. i believe i have given you sufficient information; if i havent, just ask....thank you

Re: New Video Card

Hello and Welcome to TSF

The best thing to do is disable the on-board video in the BIOS but if you cannot get into the BIOS go into Device Manager and disable it. Then connect the monitor cable to the video card and boot

Re: New Video Card

I have tried disabling the onboard card via device manager. When I accessed my BIOS, I saw no option for disabling the onboard card. I did enable VGA though and assigned it an IRQ (5) of it's own. That didn't help. I also tried installing the new card without hooking the monitor up to it; thinking maybe if I started up with my monitor plugged into my onboard card, I could install the drivers for the new card, restart and have better luck. However, I had the same problem. Basically, my monitor won't turn on if I have the video card in a slot.

Was this successful?

No, you need to connect the monitor to this new card, Windows will detect the new hardware and allow you to install the driver just follow the prompts

Re: New Video Card

Hi all

I think in the Bios for some of the older Presarios, try looking in the "Advanced" menu (generally the second tab from the left), then look for "Primary Video Adapter", and you should have the choice between Onboard, AGP, and PCI --- if you don't see PCI as an option, you might not be able to use a PCI card with your model as the primary adapter. You'd likely have better luck with an AGP card -- often, the onboard is automatically disabled in favor of the AGP, when detected.

If you see PCI in your "Primary Video Adapter" menu, however = selecting PCI should do the trick.

And, like GeekGirl recommends, have the monitor connected to the Radeon before powering on.

Best of luck!
. . . Gary
