reinstalled win98 to windows.000, oops, help
was trying to replace missing files by re-installing windows98. in my tired and frustrated stupor i ignored the change path prompt and installed windows 98 to the windows.000 directory. now my computer defaults to windows.000 as my operating system. how do i reverese this mistake?
for such a simple error, there seems to be very little information available on how to fix it. |

Is there a win98 directory and a windows.000 directory? or just a windows.000 directory. If only the latter I expect you can simply re-name the directory.

Tried to Rename
there are 2 directories. windows.000 and windows. the windows directory contains all of my previous information on my hard drive.
my computer only recognizes windows.000 as the operatring system thus will not allow me to rename the windows.000 directory. it either needs to be renamed or deleted in dos mode prior to start up. i don't know how to do hat however. thus i'm stuck. this issue has come up a lot when people upgrade from 98 to xp and so forth, which can be fixed within windows when using XP. but not in windows 98. Boot into Command prompt.
At the prompt type: path=c:\windows\command attrib -r -a -s -h msdos.sys edit msdos.sys This is what you should see. (Change the windows.000 to windows) ;sys [Paths] WinDir=c:\windows WinBootDir=c:\windows HostWinBootDrv=C [Options] BootMulti=1 BootGUI=1 DoubleBuffer=1 AutoScan=1 WinVer=4.10.2222 (There is more after this, just leave it alone) Save the file, then type: attrib +r +a +s +h msdos.sys Reboot. You may have to start another re-install, but you can now delete the windows.000 directory.
