computer shutdown
Hi i wonder if anyone could enlighten me on something...
Ok here's the story...First of all my operating system is windows 98 SE... Anyway... Last night i was on my computer, I had my yahoo buddy list up but i wasn't chatting atm...Then for no reason my computer shuts down but it didn't restart. So i pressed the button on the tower to start it up and it was dead. I was getting power to my screen (although it was blacked out the light was lit, showing that it was still getting power) and speakers and my modem was lit up...so i was still online....this afternoon i tried to turn on my computer again and it kicked right over...go figure... Does anyone have any idea what could have happened? |

Well there's a few things its imp. to determine first in such cases. Whether its a:
(1) Monitor problem: The led lights up so most probably the monitor is fine. But run the monitor self-test anyway (Self-test : just disc. the video cable from the back of the tower and then turn on the monitor, usually u'll get a message like 'check video cable' or a self-test patter may appear - If something like this appears then monitor is fine.) Or if you find it more easy, then just hook up the monitor to another tower and see if it works fine. (2) Faulty cables: Make sure the cables are attached firmly. Then try swapping the tower power cables with diff. ones and see if turns on. (3) Tower problem: Usually on the back of the tower there's a green led which when lit indicates that the unit is getting power. If that is not lit then it may be a faulty power supply unit. Also, do you hear a fan running or any noise inside the tower? Try these steps and then it'll be easy to tackle the prob. once its been narrowed down. If its something that just happens once in a while, then does your tower plug in directly to the wall socket or does it go into a UPS or surge suppressor? Cheers!
