OS: win98

CD Rom drive has vanished!

Hey Folks!

My CD Rom drive stopped working in my Win98 SE operating system. Not sure of the cause - CD Rom had been freezing up on occassion prior to this. Possible I might have zapped something in the registry when running Adaware (I know - I should have done a registry backup) - but seems less likely).I had just recently reformated and reloaded Win98SE - so I thought the quickest solution would be to simply reformat and reload Win98. I used my Win98 SE boot disk, repartioned (went back to primary and used single partion), reformatted and, and upon reboot allowed CD Rom startup - typed in F:\Setup.exe and nothing!! Not reading drive F. I tried a fresh boot disk. Same thing. Tried different drive designations. Zilch! A: drive does work - so I could conceivably load my old Win 3.1 OS - but to what avail? I also have the CD Rom floppy boot disk from my Win 3.1 OS but I don't know if this matches or would work with my current computer. Where do I go from here??? Here's my system specs:
Motherboard CPU Type Intel Celeron-A, 500 MHz (7.5 x 67)
Motherboard Name - Intel Cayman CA810 (4 PCI, 2 DIMM, Audio, Video)
Motherboard Chipset - Intel Whitney i810
System Memory 64 MB (PC133 SDRAM)
BIOS Type AMI (11/19/99)

Any ideas will be much appreciated! Thanks.
