win98se freezes playing internet videos and some games
am new here but hope someone will have some ideas on this problem.
running win98se, was updating some drivers and have encountered a problem that has me stumped. in WMP, when trying to play movie previews, or on a news website trying to play videos and on some games, the system just freezes. No error messages of any kind, just a continual "clock". Have to cntl-alt-delete to get out of it and reboot. Everything else seems to be working fine. Other things that have occured, when trying to install Shockwave, system will freeze at the very end of the install. Again, no error messages. Have tried to run a little program from Creative that scans the system informaton and it freezes up. A scan that runs when trying to upgrade win98se to XP will freeze up, no error messages. Any ideas? |

Welcome to TSF.
My guess is that the drivers are causing the problems. Try removing them in the Device Manager and restart. Reinstall the drivers again.

Sorry, forgot to mention that I had uninstalled the updated drivers and reinstalled the older drivers, this being the sound and video drivers. Didn't seem to make any difference. I did upgrade DirectX to 9.0c, but I can't remember if I encountered the problem before or after the upgrade. The video card is an AOpen PA3000 Plus which is an Nvidia TNT2. Sound card is a Creative Labs Soundblaster PCI 128. The DirectX tests for the video work just fine, the tests for the sound do not even show up. Anytime I run diagnostics for DirectX, it tells me that an problem was encountered with the sound the last time it was run.

Which drivers did you updates (sound or video)? Try reinstalling the sound drivers if that wasn't the one you were updating before.
